We have a long (4 syllable) surname. Is Ruth a bit TOO old fashioned?

Both awful.

I love the name Ruth, its my daughters middle name. Only reason it wasn't her first is its my mil's name! Frances goes very well with it, more so then Elizabeth in my view.

steppemum · 29/11/2016 09:02

I love it, but then I am biased. Frances is a family name and my mum, me and dd all have it as middle name, and my first name begins with R!

Thanks for the feedback all! I'm actually in Australia, not the UK - so the pronounciation shouldn't be too much of an issue. Our second choice was Ruth Elizabeth.

They are lovely names. My only hesitation would be if you live in an area where the local accent often pronounces 'th' as 'f'.

SpotTheDuck · 29/11/2016 08:24

I like both names, but I don't like how the "th" of the Ruth sort of runs into the "f" of frances....

Eek, I really don't like it, it's such a plain name to me, BUT it isn't my child, so if you love it, go for it.

margiebargie · 29/11/2016 08:11

Sensible/solid.

SpecialStains · 29/11/2016 08:10

I really love it. Those are on my girls names list (I had a boy). It's a really nice and solid name.

Other names I liked were Rachel, Hazel and Martha.

Best wishes with the baby. Smile

I know lots of Ruths in their 50s and 60s. Sorry but they are all a type, very staid.

CockneyViv · 29/11/2016 08:04

Ruth Frances sounds a little American 'old money ' but I think Ruth is a pretty name

Wishfulmakeupping · 29/11/2016 07:59

I love Frances I'm not keen on Ruth

Systamex · 29/11/2016 07:57

I really like Ruth. It's a pretty name and all the Ruth's I've known were lovely 😊

It's nice.

Nick name Ruthie

LarrytheCucumber · 29/11/2016 07:13

It does seem old fashioned, but isn't old fashioned 'in'.
