How would you pronounce . . .

Marisa

Bearing in mind the differences in regional accent/dialect, the two options I would offer are

  1. Marissa (i as in hip and long s as in miss)
  2. Mareesa (emphasis on the i as in pizza)

TIA!!

Option 1 like Clarissa :-)

AmberEars · 30/11/2016 03:20

I don't know any Marisas (only Marissas), so the spelling would throw me a bit. I'd probably go with option 1.

PitilessYank · 30/11/2016 03:15

Option 1, but I live in the US, if that makes a difference.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 30/11/2016 03:05

Muh-rh-sa

ChimpyChops · 29/11/2016 23:33

Option 1, I work with a Marisa :)

drinkupbaby · 29/11/2016 22:29

Option 1 and I'm basing this on The O.C

Allovertheworld16 · 29/11/2016 21:30

I know a Mar-eesa

Loyly · 29/11/2016 14:55

The same as Marissa, 1.

Gruffalosfriend · 29/11/2016 14:54

Marissa = Mar-issa
Mareesa and Marisa = Mar-eesa

Pluto30 · 28/11/2016 20:18

The same as Marissa. Because I knew a girl who had the Marisa spelling who still pronounced it Marissa.

Hulababy · 28/11/2016 18:37

Ma-rissa
or
M'rissa

Joinourclub · 28/11/2016 18:34

Option 1.

Mareeca I think. Pretty name!

Eolian · 28/11/2016 17:49

I'm sorry - I wasn't trying to tell you it was a misspelling! It's just that I'm a supply teacher. I take loads of registers, often for classes I've never met. I always ask the child if I'm unsure if the pronunciation of the name, but I always guess in my head dirst. And I see sooo many variations on spellings of the same names! I'd never heard of a name pronounced Mareesa. Will look out for it!

AtiaoftheJulii · 28/11/2016 17:33

Option 1

Sophronia · 28/11/2016 17:28

Mareesa

DramaAlpaca · 28/11/2016 16:57

I'd instinctively want to pronounce it Mareesa.

However, the only Marisa I've known had Italian parents and pronounced it Marissa, to rhyme with Clarissa.

It's a lovely name, however it's pronounced.

VoteyMcVoteFace · 28/11/2016 16:47

Eolian it's not a misspelling. 'Tis a real name, honest!

Interesting. thanks all.
Mondegreens Yes, exactly those two possibilities.

Eolian · 28/11/2016 16:40

I would assume it was an alternative spelling or misspelling of Marissa and pronounce it that way, although I'd ask first if poss.

Mondegreens · 28/11/2016 16:38

The first one rhymes with 'harissa' or 'Clarissa', the second Mar-EE-sa?

Though the actress Marisa Tomei I think pronounces her name to rhyme with Clarissa...

TheRavensFeather · 28/11/2016 16:35

Like Clarissa. mar- Ris-a
