William

This is currently our top boys choice. A bit worried it's too popular but at least it's always been popular, so won't date. With Finn I would worry it is a bit of its time.

William, despite its popularity, is timeless and classic. Finn feels very 'now'.

I like both, but would probably opt for William as I like the shortened options. William Finn is quite nice.

Also short for Finley/Finlay. I think that's where its "common-ness" comes from as about 10 years ago, every second boy was Finley.

If this sort of thing bothers/interests you, ask yourself, "William is in the next room, how old is he?" then substitute it for "Finn".

For me, I'd have no clue how old William was, because as pps have said, it's timeless. Finn would definitely be a child.

(eg how old is Charlotte? - who knows...how old is Ava? Ava is either 85 or 3 Grin)

Finn short for Finnegan. There was a man called Michael Finnegan, he had whiskers on his chinnagan, the wind came down and blew them inagain, poor old Michael Finnegan.
William is a very overused name, imo.

I know a William Finn, who has always gone by Finn. I think it's a nice idea and gives more options if he does find Finn too popular.

Haha they were our names for our twins. Didn't use them as we had girls. Both lovely imo

I know only one Finn who is a delightful little boy and I have always thought his name was just right for him. William is nice too though.

I have a 12 year old Finn and he is the only one I know. He likes the name.

Both these were in my top 3 for DS.

In the end I decided on William (as a second name) because I got the feeling there were little finns everywhere at the moment, and the name would date.

Since, I've seen a woman who I strongly dislike for some irrational reason am barely acquainted to has named her rather ugly baby Finn, and I'm so relieved I didn't choose it!

Both great names! I'm a big fan of Finn and would choose that, but William is classic and a good choice too.

William is nice but they are very common. There are two at DDs preschool and we know another two through friends.

Finn is nice and I think less common, but it's less of a classic name, so will date more easily.

They are both very popular, although in different ways- William because it's a classic. Finn because it's trendy (though I think its peak has passed, a few years ago almost every boy was either Finn or Finlay)

I'd go for William.

Love them both but would use Will as the everyday name if I chose William. If you were using William day to day I'd go with Finn
