I've gone off my 3 month old's name... Help!

My 3 month old daughter has a name that isn't that common (isn't in the top 100) which I like. I never shorten it, but don't care what other people do, if they used the known shortenings.

There's a NN I honestly never thought of, they're saying it to take the piss (family) but go on to say how she'll get it all her life anyway, so they are starting her young Hmm

I'm thinking of changing it to Grace, I know that's popular, but there's no offensive NNs, is there?

Some of these comments have made me laugh ;)

Top offender is Mark...

I suppose youre right, I just worried that Gobs/Gobby is a normal thing for Gabriellas to get called

Gabriella is lovely.

Frankly, if your family are calling a beautiful 3 month old "Gobby Gabby" they will ruin any name for you because they are being dicks. I bet this isn't the only dickish stuff they do to you.

Pixilicious · 22/11/2016 18:42

I went to school with a gross grace so if people are so inclined (children!) can think of a horrid nickname. Gabriella is a lovely name, your family are being dicks.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 22/11/2016 18:42

What are the worst offenders names? Play them at their own game.

Mondegreens · 22/11/2016 18:42

Just tell them to stop. They sound ghastly and, frankly, more than a bit rough. And given that no tiny baby can possibly be 'gobby', it's not as though they can even claim that a talkative child is liable to be called that - it's actually fairly unpleasant.

I would challenge them on it every time, and I wouldn't dream of changing her name unless it has really soured on you. It's a lovely, underused name, and 'Gobby Gabby' isn't honestly something that would occur to any normal person. Do they stand around on the street roaring at one another, Eastenders-style ('You wind yer fuckin' neck in, Gobbeh Gabbay, or I'll 'ave you laughing on the other side of your face!') or something?

I know two adult Gabriellas, both Italian/Italian descent, and one uses the full name, the other Gabi. Both are talkative, strong people, and I have never in my life heard anyone call either 'Gobby Gabby'.

HeCantBeSerious · 22/11/2016 18:42

Go non-contact until they can behave themselves. Twats. Gabriella is one of my favourite names.

Normandy144 · 22/11/2016 18:41

Ha, great minds think alike Lestat!

I've a few more for you....

Jizface John/Jeremy/James
Diahrorrea Diana
Idiot Isabel

Give us the initials and we will come up with some beauties!

BobbieDog · 22/11/2016 18:41

You need to start getting snippy with them. Nip it in the bud now. My family hate my dd name but its tough shit they dont get to choose her name. I put a stop to any shit nicknames straightaway.

If your not keep on gabby, i would encourage ella or just be very stern about them using her proper name.

Meadows76 · 22/11/2016 18:41

I asked this on another thread about changing a name but the OP declined to answer.

What part of name changing is easier than just setting them straight?

'Ooo how's gobby gabby today?' - 'her name is Gabriella, can you please stop calling her gobby' - 'ah yeah a bit insensitive, sorry about that'

OR

'Oo how's gobby gabby today?' - 'actually she is called grace now' - 'WTF'

user1479835256 · 22/11/2016 18:40

Hi my best friends daughter is a Gabriella and even though she really is Gobby no one has ever called her that. I also went to school with a Gabrielle and no one ever called her that NN.

I think your family are just being a bit weird. I've never heard this name ever shortened to Gobby. Do they know any other Gabriella's?

It's a lovely name and will stand you in good stead when she is older.

Normandy144 · 22/11/2016 18:39

Oh please don't change it. It's such a beautiful name - it's my daughters middle name. I feel like if you change it to Grace then they will have won. Have you actually told them how upset it is making you feel and that you are seriously contemplating changing it because of their behaviour? I'd be tempted to start calling them by unpleasant nicknames and see how they like it. Can you tell us their names and we can come up with some suitable suggestions? In all honesty though, when Gabriella is old enough she can tell them where to go!

SimonNeilshair · 22/11/2016 18:38

Gabrielle is a beautiful name, I'd never have thought of that NN and I doubt the majority of people will either! don't change it. Do your family know how much you dislike it and that you are considering changing it? I hope they feel thoroughly ashamed of themselves if they do!

MissMargie · 22/11/2016 18:37

I would stick with it.
It is a lovely name. Attractive, unusual, impressive, I prefer it to Grace.

Thatwaslulu · 22/11/2016 18:37

I don't mean Gabriella is a horrid name by the way. It's not. It's really pretty (prettier than Grace)

LestatVonGaribaldi · 22/11/2016 18:36

Tbh I'd just start calling my family silly/offensive nn, so Mick the Dick, Daniel the Spaniel etc and refuse to drop it until they agree the same

Thatwaslulu · 22/11/2016 18:36

Bloody hell that's a horrid thing to call a baby. Incidentally it is the same nn my son and his friends give to their disliked headteacher whose surname is Gabby.

elijahismylove · 22/11/2016 18:35

I just feel like it's going to end up being Gobby... She gets Gobs from them too, instead of Gabs (I don't really mind Gabs) but Gobs, so they're shortening Gobby is ridiculous.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 22/11/2016 18:34

I'd stick with Gabriella. She can put them straight when she's old enough. Honestly, every name has the potential of some sort of nickname.

EssentialHummus · 22/11/2016 18:33

Don't change it because of some idiots you know.

Hear hear!

finova · 22/11/2016 18:32

That's not a nickname.
If you change it to Grace it'll prob become 'grumpy Grace' or 'grouchy Grace' when she cries if they are that way inclined.

kavvLar · 22/11/2016 18:32

If someone wants to twist a name into an insult then they will.

For example Grace - butt face

You can't legislate for dick heads. What you can do is raise your daughter to hold her head high, give a withering look, and ignore the idiots. Gabriella is a beautiful name. Don't change it because of some idiots you know.

dalmatianmad · 22/11/2016 18:31

I love the name Gabriella, it's a beautiful name, you're family are arseholes Wink

tellyjots · 22/11/2016 18:31

Gabriella is a beautiful name. Ignore your family, they are being dicks.

Alternatively you could tell us some of their names to see what we can come up with for them.

Islacornx · 22/11/2016 18:31

Your family are being really insensitive and cruel. Please ignore them. Gabriella is an absolutely beautiful name! Please don't be put off by the name because of your family, have you told them to stop and how it makes you feel? X

OhFuds · 22/11/2016 18:30

Aw how mean of them to call a new baby that!

Gabriella is a lovely name and I wouldn't change it, definitely have words with the people calling her Gobby Gabby.
