Perdita ?

So what I thought was going to be DS2 has turned into Dd1! Being utterly convinced of having a boy prior to my scan today I has my boys names pretty sorted .
I have always loved the name Perdita since I read The winters tale many moons ago , surprisingly DH is on board and likes it too which for a man who can only come up with "Dave" as a name for his son is shocking to say the least .
I have reservations though , we are not posh like seriously not , very normal 2 working parents small semi in a fairly crap area ( think local Lidl rather than Waitrose) for some reason I think of Perdita as a posh girls name?

Other names I have mulled over are Erin , Eleanor and Matilda which all seem a safer choice but I'm 40 this is my last baby for sure and I wonder will I regret not sticking to my guns saying stuff what anyone thinks that's her name !

I've name changed for this for obvious reasons. I have a Perdita. There were only 7 little girls with that name in 2012, the year she was born. I first heard it from the play, having studied a ton of Shakespeare at school and uni.

I'm slightly embarrassed to say that we are quite posh. We call her Perdie - which was always the plan - but wanted to give her a proper full name. We pronounce it Perd-i--ter as it reflects the Latin roots of the name though most people who aren't familiar with the name assume it to be Per-dee-ter.

The name is certainly not to everyone's taste but we generally get very positive comments. The meaning was the only thing that made us hum and ha about the name but we went for it in the end. We reasoned that in The Winter's Tale, Perdita was a beautiful princess who lived happily ever after and wasn't defined by being lost. I also like a spot of Jilly too. Wink

We like that she has the choice of being Perdita, Perdie (various spellings) or Dita. Having said that, two little school friends called her Perdie-Werdie today - something I wasn't expecting! She gaily called them other words that rhymed with their respective names so I'm not too worried. Freya-Beya and Willow-Pillow all play very happily together!

I'd say go for it if you love the name - don't be concerned with other people. One final point is that I have a very unusual name (well, it was until fairly recently). There are very few adult women in this country with my name and I love the fact that I can call up people for work and not even bother with a surname. It's a bit like saying it's Madonna on the phone, if you see what I mean! My little Perdie - and possibly yours too? - will most likely be in a similar position. And I really like that.

No. it's bad enough when you accidentally have the same name as your neighbours dog (think a very 80's susie/sammy type) but to intentionally name your child after an iconic dog Confused no way

It's pretty, but it does mean 'the lost one' and was commonly given to orphans and foundlings, so it's a bit sad!

PS Pongo and Missis were the original dog couple in 101 Dalmatians - Perdita was an additional Dalmatian they found lost in the snow.

I love Perdita, it's a bit unusual and there's a choice of nicknames...Perdy, Dita or even perri.

I don't like the meaning, and also picture a Dalmatian dog when I hear it... It also reminds me of a really bad "la perdita" tattoo my friend got when we were teenagers, which she then had to have covered up, but that's not really relevant to anyone else I suppose!
