Really upset - Mum and MIL are having a go at us.

I feel like just changing her middle name completely.

It took 7 years to become pregnant, so we probably won't try for another.

We thought it would be nice to honour both grandmothers, but only wanted her to have 1 middle name.

My mum is Julia, my MIL is Ariana.

We chose Juliana for her middle name...

We were so excited to tell everyone the name, thinking they'd be so excited. No, all we get is "you should have given her 2 middle names" "you've now used neither of our names" and obviously many more.

I'm just so upset.

Tell them to fuck off. It's an absolutely lovely name- it's really clever what you've done. If they don't like it tell them she's not getting a middle name now (do it secretly)

Cucumber5 · 18/11/2016 20:41

What a pit olive instead of Olivia

WouldHave · 18/11/2016 20:29

Which did you go for?

BikeRunSki · 18/11/2016 19:28

The grandmas are being very silly. Juliana is a perfect blend of both names, and is a beautiful name. I know a Roderick named in a similar way after his grandads Rodney and Frederick. Unfortunately Roderick is not such a nice name as Juliana.

Congratulations on your new daughter.

emotionsecho · 18/11/2016 19:22

I think your mix of the two grandmothers names was lovely, it is a nice name in its own right but with the added connection made it even better, they, however, are being utterly pathetic.

Both combinations with the middle name sound good, I'd be sorely tempted to go for Katherine Olivia now though as I don't think their behaviour makes them deserving of having your dd named after them. I'm with you on the only one middle name as well and Julia Ariana as separate middle names doesn't work and no doubt they would have been miffed by where their names came in the running order (it doesn't work as Ariana Julia either!).

Congratulations and choose whichever name makes you and your dh happy.

FreddyEddy · 18/11/2016 19:14

I didn't discuss! I announced her name Smile

Thanks everyone!

......and this is why you shouldn't discuss baby names with anyone other than your partner.

Both names sound lovely OP.

PenguinsandPebbles · 18/11/2016 19:06

Congratulations and so lovely to hear a positive a baby story, seven years that is such a long time so happy for you :) so many sad times for me and my DP with trying to make a baby so this gives me some hope :)

So sorry the grandmothers are being so ridiculous it's a lovely nod to both of them they are being incredibly selfish to make such a fuss. Get two pet rocks and name them after them that will teach them and pick a different middle name or choose not to have one at all :)

Congratulations again!

Couchpotato3 · 18/11/2016 19:05

Ignore, ignore and then ignore some more. Your Mum and MIL are being completely silly about this. If you feel like using a completely different middle name, then do, and then they'll have something else to moan about. I think Juliana is lovely, and a great way to honour both the grandmothers, but if they are going to give you a hard time about it, stuff them and pick something different (or don't - just do what YOU want to do).
Dear oh dear, are they being really overbearing about everything else too?

CordeliaFrost · 18/11/2016 18:59

I think your mum and MIL are behaving appallingly, and however beautiful Juliana is, I'd be tempted to go with Katherine Olivia in honor of your father instead.

As others have said, if you had used both names separately, whoever's name was second would be complaining about that.

happyinthesunshine · 18/11/2016 18:06

Your solution is perfect. My middle name is the same, a combination of both my grandmothers names. I feel very honoured to have it.

paddypants13 · 18/11/2016 17:18

I like both Katherine Juliana/ Olivia. I think Juliana is a beautiful name and unusual too. I would stick with it if you love it.

My grandmothers were Marian and Maria and I have Marie as a middle name to honour them.

Dd has a version of dm's name as her first name and mil's middle name to honour her grandmothers but only because we love both names and they sound lovely together. (IMO )

diddl · 18/11/2016 16:58

Katherine Olivia is much nicer imo.

I don't dislike Juliana, but I just wouldn't be considering using their names in any context at all now.

mydietstartsmonday · 18/11/2016 16:37

How ungracious of them.
Both Olivia & Juliana are lovely names and go equally as well.
Congratulations.

PS I am shocked at you DM & DMIL.....

ftw · 18/11/2016 16:36

Congratulations and they can bollocks off. 😀

Damselindestress · 18/11/2016 16:34

I think it's a lovely combination of their names and they are being really rude and should apologise to you. Seriously, who upsets a new mother over something so petty?! You are not under any obligation to use either of their names! The name is completely up to you and your DH. Katherine Olivia is nice too.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 18/11/2016 16:28

Katherine Olivia is beautiful.
I don't think for one minute that you'll regret it.

Ilikegin · 18/11/2016 16:08

Katherine Olivia sounds lovely! I wouldn't go with Juliana after what they've said as it might always be a bone of contention!
Just so long as your surname doesn't start with a C or a K Grin

Quintessing · 18/11/2016 15:52

Op, were YOU named after your grandma? Or did your parents get to chose freely without pressure from their parents?

DragonmotherKhaleesi · 18/11/2016 15:50
  • lovely
Quintessing · 18/11/2016 15:50

But the thing is, if you go with Katherine Olivia, it will always be the name you chose because your mum and mil were immature and ungrateful. It will be commemorating their idiocy.
If you stay with Katherine Juliana, they may in time appreciate it, and you have stood your ground.

So, at the end of the day, go with the combination you like BEST, not to honour this or that person. Even if that turns out to be Katherine Cora, or Katherine Amaryllis.

Evergreen17 · 18/11/2016 15:49

We are not telling anyone the name until bubba is born. Because people are ridiculous. You did such a lovely thing even thinking about them. Enjoy your baby OP and use the name you 2 want

DragonmotherKhaleesi · 18/11/2016 15:47

Katherine olivia flows better. Both loverly names.
Congratulations

Gazelda · 18/11/2016 15:47

Katherine Olivia is very classy. Katherine Juliana is lovely too.

But why not sleep on it for a few days, while refusing to discuss it with anyone other than your DH (and MN). Emotions will cool down and the grans might apologise for being so snarky.

OP, they are both being unreasonable. They're both putting pressure on you which they have no right to. But maybe you are misinterpreting their words a little? Only you and DH know if they're honestly being nasty. I find it incredible that two grown women could react with nastiness to this issue. Disappointment and sulkiness I can see, but they'd both have to be particularly strange to actually be nasty. I'm not disbelieving you, but I'm saying that maybe you could give it a bit of time and space to let tempers and emotions cool.

LeavesinAutumn · 18/11/2016 15:47

I too like Olivia and best to go fresh after the bad blood over the other name.
