Whats your thoughts? It sounds nice with our tricky surname and is difficult to shorten. I know it's a surname but I don't have an issue you that.

I think everyone will associate with Holden Caulfield, and he wasn't the most pleasant of characters....

This^^ (sorry). I haven't heard the name mentioned without someone immediately referencing Catcher in the Rye.

All that comes to mind is:

  1. The car (known as a bogan/chav brand, btw)
  1. Caulfield. Who was an absolute nobscrot and of the most irritating characters ever written.

And Catcher in the Rye is still a prescribed text in a lot of schools, so your Holden will come across this.

Can't call myself a fan Enid, loved the book tho.
I like the clean sound of it and how it will suit boy, teen and man.

A big plus is how it tones down DPs comic book sounding surname (Irish on steroids!)

I don't particularly like the sound of it, but I like the literary connection.
The kind of name I could see someone picking if they were a fan of Catcher in the Rye. Are you a fan?

I'm not at all defensive, just a bit exasperated by all the car comments which has no relevance here in the UK.

But you asked for our view?! I like the name, but to me it is car related and I've never been to Australia. I also know holders and monaros have a following over here. So if a few people on a parents forum have picked up the link, we won't be the only ones. I don't think it's a bad link, but it is one.

I didnt know Holden was the name for Vauxhall in Australia but as its not a recognised first name in the UK your son will have a lifetime of explain that its his first name not his surname.

People still sometimes say their surname before their first name. I know this as i work on telephone lines dealing with customers and when you ask their name they will say Jones, Jim Jones or whatever.

First thing I think of is a car. One day your child might want to travel and/or work in Australia and the name would certainly result in comments.

Oh and I have heard of the Australian cars too. Many people have visited Australia and even seen the cars they have there, heady times!
I think you're being snippy. If you like the name that's great, go for it but I can practically hear you snorting at the replies (re cars in particular) from here (not Australia).
Perhaps a 🇦🇺 or 🚗 as an accent over the O?

Are you American? It sounds like one of those names Americans give to their children to sound like they live on the Upper East Side.
As a child everyone I known would have followed the name Holden with McCrotch and probably continued long into adulthood. Seriously.

Ok, just done a little straw poll, asked 3 friends to ask their husbands/sons if they'd heard of the Aussie cars...big fat zero, neither had I and I love cars so really doesn't seem to be an issue here in the UK.
