I need hippyish and out there names that won't get my child bullied at school.

NC because nobody irl knows I'm pregnant yet.

I love hippy and unusual names, but they need to work beyond childhood too.

I have a few that I love like ziggy and cobain and bluebell and chakra but I couldn't use them irl.

Please help.

Rowen, Astrid, are not really unusual names. Neither is sonny or spike. There is some nice suggestions on here, but some suggestions are simply awful.

I mean wolf? Seriously?

The one Fuschia I know her parents then joined some Indian cult with a guru and her name got changed again...

I knew a child with an unusual name Sunny or Sonny think he CS, know a Rowan who's lovely, friends have children with a moon or moon based name (like Luna or sow thing) seems fine, another friend has twins who are India and another (forget other) which seem good, latter ones from moon based onwards still kids so unsure how names affected them or will do.

Me and my brother have unusual foreign first names (and middle) which though they're nice and unusual they are certainly memorable and I rarely hear of someone with my name! Not saying it's not nice but there are time when I wished I'd been called my mum's other chosen names of Polly or Anna.

Seren for a girl (as mentioned above). It means 'star' in Welsh so you have the hippy vibe and a beautiful name which will work in any context.

Oh, and just to add that I have a 'Top 10' name and was bullied mercilessly in years 8-10.

Don't hold back from using unusual names just because of a judgmental few.

Just wanted to say that we live in a very multicultural part of London and most children in DS's school have unusual names... None of them bat an eyelid! DS himself has an uncommon name and not one of his schoolmates have remarked on it. You may find that children are far more accepting of individuality than the unpleasant person upthread.

Summer, Rowan, India and Willow are mainstream these days.

I met a baby girl called Susan the other day - that's this generation's "out there" name.

Although my name isn't 'way out', unheard of or not a real people name, I had the piss taken mercilessly throughout school (nasty sexual references) and after many years of not, have recently had schoolboy sniggering when selling it out.

It's not a bloody joke. Wish I'd been called Mary. It sucks when you are 4 and dread introducing yourself of calling your name out in class.

Nickname your child Wheelbarrow or Deedlebit but please don't lumber them with a weird name.

I know of Jonquil , Fushia, Scarlet, Clover, Jade, Freya, Fritha, Tabitha, Emerald, Zowie. They are all very successful in their chosen careers.

Please do not call your child Bluebell or Chakra, it is just awful. They are not 'unique' they just sound really wanky.

Melody. Can be shortened to a very bland Mel, if necessary.

Children can change their names for political reasons if they want to. An unusual name is an advantage as it makes you stand out. no one has ever said 'which picklme', or 'picklme who?', I promise.

Sierra, India, Luna, so many options for girls, boys less so.

Halfa I do really love out there and hippy names but I am very cautious that the name needs to work in adulthood too. The ones I listed in my op are names I love, but wouldn't use for that reason. I'm looking for a compromise.

halfapint being called Barack didn't hold back a certain US president and that is a pretty unusual name!!

It's not about UNUSUAL; it's about "out there" and "hippy"! There are plenty of classical names that are unusual and uncommon but not hippy or daft or outthere.
