Opinions on Charlotte?

Baby girl is here, I feel like she's a Charlotte. Although we had decided on Layla/Leila!

Do you prefer Layla/Leila or Charlotte?

Go for Charlotte, if it's a name you love.

For me it's a timeless classic.
Yes it's popular but so what?

Layla/Leila are both lovely names but I personally wouldn't use either as I'd imagine having to constantly tell people how it's pronounced.

Also, yes, Charlottes tend to get Charlie as a default nn. A shame because Charlie is nowhere near as nice as Charlotte.

Yeah, johans and the word is spelt "laylah". Do you think Layla or Leila looks more like laylah?

Layla and the Majnun. The original spelling is Layla.

I would put Charlotte in the boring category, but that's just my opinion. If you love it, use it. But most Charlotte's end up being Charlie once they're school age so consider whether you like that too.

Charlotte. Loads of potential nick names. I have a yr 5 and no Charlottes in her year over two schools. Leila is meh imho. And easy to mis-spell.

I vote for Charlotte. It's my 2 year old's name and I love it. Nobody shortens it although I'm sure that will probably change when she goes to school.

Prefer Charlotte but would avoid due to popularity and possibility of being seen as a royalist

I'm not wild about either. Charlotte is very common, solidly middle classy, it's a bit bleh for me. Layla has a different feel altogether. I know a couple of Leilas - they both have Middle East origins, and it's a Middle Eastern name, so relatively common there.

We have a Charlotte, she is 6. Most people call her Lottie, she has never been called Charlie. I love her name and have only come across one other child called Charlotte who is 12.

I didn't know that Leila was meant to be pronounced Layla. I've never met either a Layla or a Leila. I'm not really keen on it to be honest.

Charlotte is lovely, and despite the statistics I haven't met a baby girl for years called Charlotte. But it's very timeless and classic in a way that very few names are.

I have a 12 yo Charlotte and when she was born it wasn't such a common name. I think it's beautiful and strong and don't know any other charlottes around my dd's age but wonder if it's over-used now since William and Kate named their daughter.....

Leila (pronounced Lay-la). Much less common and can't be shortened.

Er, Layla is an Arabic name and the closest spelling used in the story of Layla and the Majnun. The word from which the name comes is spelt "laylah".

To me, Charlotte is a spoilt rich girl (may have something to do with one I knew while growing up), whereas both Layla and Leila sound beautiful, spirited, intelligent, and a bit glamorous when older. But it's all about personal associations/ tastes, so go with your heart OP.

I really like Leila (not quite so fond of Layla - not sure why!) but it does seem to be fashionable at the moment. For years I only had one friend with the name, but I know of lots of children called Lila/Leila/Laylas. Give it another few years I expect it will fade into obscurity again. So it might be a bit dating. Whereas Charlotte is a timeless classic...

There also seem to be different pronunciations for Leila - which could be annoying. My friend Leila is pronounced Lie-la (never Lay-la)
