Connotations when you hear the name Blake

DW and I are having an enjoyable struggle naming our DS2 (due December, so there's time yet!)

We have a difference of opinion on Blake. I'd be interested for people's input on what associations you have with the name: positive, negative, indifferent etc.

Naturally you will suggest alternatives. Those would be very welcome too.

I think of William Blake, James Blake, and Blake Shelton.... So no particular theme!!

I'm not normally a fan of surnames as first names but Blake is one that I don't mind. And Logan is one that I really like! I think they go together well too, better than any of those other names in your list actually.

Actually Logan's Run and Blake 7 together are pretty cool!

However what about the following alternatives:

Blair
Blane
Struan
Lewis
Harris
Ian
Callum
Douglas

I was also going to say Donald but perhaps Don Logan is an unfortunate association..,Grin

From your list, I think Brodie and Gabriel go really well with Logan Smile

Finn / Finlay are just so popular now which would put me off even though they're nice names.

Blake makes me think of Dynasty and then Home & Away. Is your dw coming round to it at all having seen this thread?

Namechange, we do have a shortlist. It waxes and wanes as we have a crisis of confidence every so often:

Adair
Angus (a little too Scottish for me, truth be told)
Brodie
Cameron
Duncan
Finlay (we'd nn him Finn, so why not just Finn? Because we're pretentious, that's why!)
Gabriel
Lucas

That's about as many off the top of my head as I can remember.

What about Max? It's a bit more classic but it still goes with Logan.

Thanks for all your input so far lovely people. If the boy does grow up to be a Patrick Swayze from Point Break style surfer, and we've called him Archibald, I'm going to consider it a trick missed!

I agree that it's important for both of you to like the name. It's a shame your DW isn't a fan but I'm sure you'll find something else you both like. Do you have a shortlist?

Namechange30, I do like it, and DW is struggling to articulate (at least to me) why she doesn't. Something to do with social strata, I think?

To be honest, in life, there are names you just don't like. You shouldn't have to defend or articulate why you do or don't. I was just interested if her view on the name was shared by others. We won't be calling the child Blake, because if she is, at best, mildly unhappy with the name, that's pretty grim. I'd not want to be argued into liking/begrudgingly accepting a name I didn't like - especially when I'll be saying it day in day out to someone I love for the next 50 years.

I'm not awfully fond of it (there was another thread on Blake a few days ago) but it's not terrible. I think Blake 7 too.
However as you pointed out, if you have a Logan already (love Logan's Run) I think Blake fits beautifully and follows the sci fi theme.Grin

In truth the Logan was intended to be a sort of Scottish sounding name (secondarily a character from the X-Men films, so not exactly sci-fi, but sci-fi adjacent). In our opinion Logan is a bit of a 'cool' name, and therefore, per Sativa upthread, a Thomas or Oliver, lovely as they are as names, don't go quite so well as something mildly exotic.

We've been having a look at a second Scottish name for DS2, but are struggling a wee bit with ones we like, so have elected to cast our net a bit wider.

Blake Carrington here too. And weirdly, (and I'm not sure why) it makes me think of cigars.
