Connotations when you hear the name Blake

DW and I are having an enjoyable struggle naming our DS2 (due December, so there's time yet!)

We have a difference of opinion on Blake. I'd be interested for people's input on what associations you have with the name: positive, negative, indifferent etc.

Naturally you will suggest alternatives. Those would be very welcome too.

Cauliflower, we love that sketch. It's why we could not consider Aaron as one of our names.

Jaggy, firstly, there can be only one. But I prefer Duncan to Connor, so that's a smart choice. Secondly, you vetoed Jean-Luc in favour of James Tiberius didn't you? Highly revealing choice that!

I do actually know a wee Scottish Blake. So not that out there. :)

We briefly almost went with Duncan (of the clam Mcleod Grin ).

Also considered some of these. .. (well at least one of us did, we weren't both so keen on all of them! )

For a boy? Not good connotations for me, but that is purely because I have only met one in my life and he was an epic shit.

I do really like it for a girl actually, though imagine it's quite marmite.

Blake's 7 - that's a blast from the past. Loved watching and then reenacting it in the primary school playground.

It seems to be in the process of becoming a girl's name: if you care about such things.

I really like Finley - pronounced FINLee.

Reminds me of either William Blake and Blake Lively (or now Reynolds as she's married to Ryan) so interesting twist as a female link for me.

Grin. They are spread over an age range from teens to babies and we are in Scotland so it's not unusual.

There are lots of Finlays and Lewis's around my bit.

From your list the only ones I don't currently know any children with that name are:
Brodie
Gabriel

Gruoch... that is a lot of Finlays to know!

We do like Finlay, so I feel we're in the clear if we go that route.

Namechange, thanks for Max, we'll chuck it in the mix.

I have to say, all the Finlays I know (about 10 of them) are called Finlay. None of them go by Finn.

Make sure you actually like Finlay as the full name in case he ends up using it.

Sukitakeitoff, do I dare show my DW the thread? She might take it that I've been trying to drum up support for a name that for her is veto'd!

Interesting on Finlay/Finn... I hadn't appreciated it was so far up the naming charts these days. Then again, my sister's name is Olivia, her name has been top 10 in the UK for 30 years, and until last year the only other Olivia I had met was from Hawaii!
