There is a spike (I believe it's his actual name and not a NN) in my sons class at school. At first I was Hmm but it's grown on me.

I really love Teddy (even just on it's own) and Buffy is a cute nn for Elizabeth - I never thought of it myself tbh.

It's definitely a generational thing, I know a Sabrina, because we're late 20's we grew up with Sabrina the Teenage Witch so comments are made now, I doubt many 15 year olds will know about Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Some of the comments posted here were horrid.

I think for people of around my age (late 30s), literally the only Buffy I'd ever heard of was the TV show. Plus not knowing it was a nickname of Elizabeth. So the assumption is that you were naming after the tv character, and might find the references to other characters from the show funny. I also think it's such an unusual name that people might have genuinely thought you were not being serious.

I've heard of Buffy the vampire, but I thought it was no different to Arthur (the cartoon), Sabrina, etc. Which I know a few of.

My Buffy is 15, she says that she never gets comments about it... Maybe it's just the generation. Teddy is 11 and also doesn't get comments about his name, that's why I was really quite hurt and I didn't find it funny, no... The 'awful name', etc. Comments were not funny in the slightest.

Manumission I think Bunty started as a term of endearment that became more of a 'name-y' nickname, rather than actually being short for a specific name.

OP, I think Buffy is fine. But to clear something up, have you heard of the TV show? Can you see that is why people were being 'humorous'? Lots of people do name their kids after TV shows so I can see why people went there. Just ignore the suggestions you don't like!

I honestly never knew that Buffy was short for Elizabeth. I've never heard of or met anyone who goes by it. I just thought it was a made up name for the TV show!

Why is Buffy any more ridiculous as a nn than say Pearl for Margaret? Just because you've never heard of it doesn't mean that it doesn't exist! My aunt is a Buffy/ Elizabeth. Her brother (my dad used) to say Elizabuff when little so actually it's quite logical.
How about Emmeline nn Emmie or Elijah nn Eli?
