Lulu for a boy

Lucien nn Lulu (Lucien pronounced with a soft c like Lucy, not ch as in Italian like Luciano).

Lulu would probably only last though childhood.

Not expecting currently, just thinking for the future.

Lucien is really nice. A decent nickname would be Lou. Lulu is just way too feminine.

FWIW I don't see the problem with predetermined nicknames in general - there's plenty of Catherines and Williams who have always been known as Kate and Bill.

By all means call him Lulu as a cutesy, baby-talk nickname! I know a few hulking, six-foot+ young men whose mums still occasionally call them Moo...

If you want a shortened nickname like Lu why not call a son Lewis? Lulu for a boy is quite frankly appalling.

Lucien is a lovely name op. I really wouldn't worry about nicknames yet. Just see what evolves. That's how nicknames seem to work best IMHO. I know a couple of sibling DCs where they have been called predetermined nicknames (shortened versions of their full names) from the moment they were born. Each to their own and all but it does feel a little bit forced.

Lulu was quite common for little boys where I grew up (not the uk) in the late 80s/90s! I'm very glad I asked the question here now!

I didn't mean Lulu as a nickname in the terms of putting it as a preferred name at preschool, or introducing him as such - more similar to how you might nickname a child Em if their name was Emily, or Ru or Rupie for Rupert.

If I have a Lucien, I'll try my best to just call him Lu or his full name, or see what evolves! Thanks for the responses.

I think nicknames evolve so I don't think you generally choose a name with the express desire of having a particular nickname. Dd1 I call Lou, her name is in no way similar to Lou it doesn't even begin with L. Dd2 at school calls herself and is referred to as Lulu because her name naturally leads to that nickname but at home, from her being tiny, she has been called Pearl.
I think in the privacy of your own home you'd get away with calling your son whatever you want but outside of home calling him Lulu would leave him open to ridicule.

And I'm not sure you can decide on twee nicknames in advance, in my experience they just kind of evolve organically.

Lucien is a LOVELY name and a favourite of mine, but Christ alive you can't call him Lulu. I agree that predetermined nicknames are contrived too.

I know a Lucien whose mum calls him Loosh.

Lucien, Louis, Lucas all great boys names. Can shorten to Lou or Louie.

But please don't inflict LuLu on a child - particularly not a boy. It will make their childhood miserable.
