Mona or Hannah

2nd DC but first DD due in February and DH and I have whittled down our names to just two: Mona and Hannah, we really can't decide, so I just wanted to see what others thought.

DS is called Finley if that makes a difference.

Or Mona as a nickname for Monica, so if the "moaner" comments occur there are other options?

I LOVE Hannah, but I also really like Mona and wouldn't give a damn about associations with moaner. Can happen with any name: Charlotte the harlot, etc.

It can happen with quite a few names (not ANY name I don't think), but some are a lot more obvious and thus more likely than others. Charlotte the harlot is pretty tenuous, especially among kids (nobody uses the word harlot these days lol). Mona, however, is an exact homophone of a pretty everyday verb.

I can imagine a Charlotte or a Hannah going through her life without ever having her name ridiculed. Whereas I would bet my life savings on at least one person making a joke at a Mona's expense at some point.

Both lovely.

I LOVE Mona, but it's definitely one of those names you have to "own". FWIW I have a name like that and I love it! Perhaps at primary school it was brought up as "weird" a few times, but I didn't really care, and by the time I was a teenager it was 100% part of my "cool" appeal :P

Hannah doesn't really have that edge, but it is beautiful. Maybe wait and see which she looks like when she's born :)

How about Moira? I once met someone with that name and was a bit jealous. I would live to possess such a dignified, elegant name. You couldn't be without personality with such a name.

I can only think "moaner" from Mona in English. In my native language it's a lovely language, so depends how you pronounce it :P

Hannah is a good name :)

Mona is truly awful and sets up for a lifetime of teasing. Imagine if she was actually a moaner....

I like Mona. It's not a name you hear much these days.

Not keen on Hannah, but it's not an awful name.

Hanna also means happiness in arabic . Woman who worked in a hotel shop told us that 1 year on holiday .

Really surprised at the overwhelming response in favour of Hannah, I was sure comments would be 50/50. Shock

I suppose we'll be going with Hannah, I do love it, it's not that popular at the moment which is a plus.

In defence of Mona, it is a very lovely name, even with the 'moaner' association.

I have a little 18 mo Hannah and get a lot of lovely comments, mainly about not knowing many tiny Hannah's and how it's a name dotted about through age groups, as another poster said.

She was never going to be a Hannah, but when she arrived she wasn't any of the names we'd picked! I have a little boy with a hebrew name too, and I just love the symmetry of it written down.
