How would you pronounce this name? (Kylee)

Kylee?

I have started working with a little Kylee, which I originally pronounced Kai-Leigh (Kai as in the name, so sounds like eye)...

My goodness, her mother was fuming. Apparently I'm stupid Hmm anyway, she says it's said as Key-Leigh.

How would you have pronounced it?

Kylie, as in Minogue.

The pronunciation she's after is spelt Keeley.

I would have done the same as you op. Ky is rhymes with eye.

You cannot make up random pronounciatipns.

If you make up a spelling expect people to use their phonetic knowledge to pronounce the word.

Definitely Kylie. If she wanted Kaylee or Keely she should have spelled it that way.

My dad's cousin named her daughter Cassie but pronounced it Casey and used to be irritated when people pronounced it Kass-ee Hmm

If you want your child's name to be pronounced correctly then spell it correctly. Or at least phonetically if you are intent on being you-need.

I come from the generation where every fifth girl was called Kylie, Keeley, Keely, Kelly, Kayleigh, Keeleigh, Kylee, Kellie, Kelley, or some other variation on the above. I would pronounce the name as Kylie, like Kylie Minogue.

I wouldn't have asked how to pronounce Kylee either FWIW. On paper, it definitely looks like a fairly acceptable spelling of Kylie. So I would have assumed it to be Kylie.

I'm not a snob with regards to unusual spellings & had the name been Kailee or Kalee, I would have asked before assuming.

It's not unreasonable to read "Ky" as K-eye.

I know a Briony whose parents decided that it should be pronounced Bree-ony, instead of the usual Bry-ony. She has gone through her whole life having to correct pronunciation, with every single person the first time they see her name, and even when she introduces herself the Bry-ony pronunciation is so ingrained that people still trip up on it.

There's being different and there's simply making life difficult for your child. The least you can do is own and accept the consequences of your choice.

Well if the mother is stupid enough to choose a 'yoonique' spelling, then she will have to get used to 99% of people (correctly IMO) pronouncing it as Kylie.

Its not so much snobbery as pronunciation though. People will pronounce Kylee like Kylie. If you don't want people to do that, you need to spell the name so that people won't do it.

If I decide to call my son something spelled Addam people are going to call him Adam. If I want them to know it's supposed to be Ay-dam, I really should stick an i or a y in there. If I choose not to do so I forfeit the right to get annoyed about 'mispronunciation' and certainly have no reason to call anyone stupid for pronouncing it the was it's spelled.

I don't even mind if it's said as Key-Leigh! But to have gotten mad at me Confused

I felt bad about not asking, but I'm glad it isn't just me who assumed the obvious!

I wouldn't ask pronunciation as I would have been sure in my own mind, based on that spelling, that is was pronounced kylie. Not because I'm a snob, but because of how the English language generally works.

Definitely Kylie.

"Ky" does not equal the "Kee" sound.

Creative spellings are one thing, this is just plain old fashioned "wrong".

I wish little Kylee's teachers luck teaching her phonics.

I would pronounce is Kylie based on that spelling. I thought 'key-leigh' was spelt Keeley or Keely. There were a lot of Keely's at my school.

Nothing to do with being a snob, but this will simply be the first time of many in this poor child's life that her parents failure to understand English pronunciation causes her this issue.

The letter 'y' in the middle of a word is usually pronounced to rhyme with eye. That's pretty basic stuff.

I have no issue with people making up names or going for alternative spellings, but this one will simply cause 99.9% of people to pronounce the name differently from how the parents want.

It looks like it should be pronounced Kylie but if it's meant to be Keeley, it's really not made clear by the spelling. But I would have probably checked when I saw the unusual spelling just in case, not that you can go back in time and do that.

People will automatically think it's Kylie though, usual. So they won't bother to ask pronunciation, and mother will apparently get upset.
