Katy or Katie?

Hi everyone,

I'm new here!

We have decided on Katy/Katie for our baby girl.

Which spelling? I think I prefer Katie, DH prefers Katy...

I prefer the look of Katie but as others have said it somehow seems like a name for a child rather than an adult.

Katy does seem more grown up as a stand alone name but I think she'd constantly be correcting the spelling.

I definitely prefer the shortened form but I think I would give the name Kathryn on the birth certificate just in case she reaches adulthood and would prefer a different or more adult form (as some of the previous posters seem to imply).

Having said that I think the different spellings of Kathryn/Katherine/Catherine/Cathryn would be annoying if it were my name. I have a name that has four variants and mine is the most common form which means most people spell it correctly. I do still get the odd person using one of the other forms.

Katherine. Shorten it to Katie if you want but as a name by itself it's so childish.

I went to school with a Charlie, a Jaz and a Saf, but at work they get to be Charlotte, Jasmine and Sarah if they want.

I'm another advocate for full names; a Catherine can later choose to be Catherine, Cat, Kat, Cath, Kath, Cathy, Kathy, Katy, Katie, Cate, Kate, or whatever. I know on MN it's popular to say "but I don't want an Alfred, my son's name is Alfie, that's the name we've chosen and we're always going to call him so what's the point in having a longer name we're never going to use, people are so snobby and traditionalist" but I think it's nice to give your child the extra options that come with a traditional full names with a wide range of potential pet names or nicknames or family names. I also think it can be quite nice to choose to have different names for different things - Jessica at work can be Jess to her friends and Jessie to her parents, and the connotations and reflection of different types of relationships is kind of nice.

My DD is katy and she loves it! There are lots of Katie's but only one Katy at her school. I think it looks more like a 'proper' name not just a nickname. But then I agree with everyone, there is never anything with her name on and she always has to spell it or correct people.

I prefer Katy. I loved 'What Katy Did,' too, and Katy seems that bit more of a complete name.

I have a Catherine, shortened to Katie. Katy just doesn't look right written down to me. I love the name Katie, but thought that by giving her the full Catherine she could choose any of the shortenings that she prefers when she is older.

Personally, I really dislike Katherine (sorry!) and I think Kate/Katy/Katie is a known name in its own right (even if it isn't on MN)

Katie Joy, not Katy Joy. At least imo.

However, Katie Elizabeth Joy is a lovely idea. I also like Katie Victoria Joy, Katie Harriet Joy and Katie Matilda Joy. I just think the name seems complete with the added middle name.

We are using Joy as a middle name, so she'll be Katie Joy. We are looking for other middle names that we like, but tbh we love Joy and prefer Katie!

Katie. Mine is 10 and not once have we been asked if it is the shortened form of another name.
