Boy names for our Swiss-American baby who'll be born (and hopefully/most likely) grow up in Scotland. Do you like these? Would they work in Scotland?

Alexander
Nathanael
David
Jason

Middle names:
Chevy
Carter
Davis
Jason
Eric

David Alexander
David Eric

Well, I'm glad that none of the name we like is too out there, super weird or anything for Scottish/British ears...

I personally am not keen on David (it wasn't my suggestion) but eally like Nathaniel and Alexander. Plus, the nn's Nate and Alec are just really nice imo.

When Chevy was first suggested I was a bit ... Shock Confused, but now I actually really like it :) it's cool to see that others seem to feel the same.

Alexander Chevy is great OP.
Also, many congratulations on your wonderful news 😄

WeArePregnant11 · 07/10/2016 19:27

Thanks :) !
I'm honestly surprised by the love for the name Alexander... but it is a super lovely name :)

DS1 was almost Alec - just Alec, but I love Sandy too.

TOGS11 · 07/10/2016 19:38

I love Alexander and Nathanael

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 07/10/2016 20:33

Alec rocks !

BadToTheBone · 07/10/2016 20:37

I have a total hatred for Alexander but I know I'm very much in the minority on MN and in real life too.

WeArePregnant11 · 07/10/2016 20:41

Alec is an absolutely lovely name. One of the reasons I personally like Alexander so much :)

I thought sandy was a girl's name? I went to school with a girl called Sandy.

Cocoabutton · 07/10/2016 20:48

In Scotland, Sandy is a short version of Alexander - my great uncle was Sandy as was a friend's brother.

WeArePregnant11 · 07/10/2016 20:53

Oh. I honestly didn't know that... interesting :)!

WankersHacksandThieves · 07/10/2016 20:59

Oh yes, it can be used as a girls name (usually spelled Sandie and from Sandra usually, which is a shortened form of Alexandra) but it's more commonly a male name in Scotland. I know a couple of small boy Sandys, 'tis very cute and great all the way to adulthood.

Alexander has loads of shortenings:

Alec
Alex
Lex
Xander
Zander
Sandy
Sanders

Unicorn1981 · 07/10/2016 21:00

Sanders?

WankersHacksandThieves · 07/10/2016 21:03

I've only ever met one Sanders, but it is a legitimate shortening :)

Unicorn1981 · 07/10/2016 21:08

Really? It's a surname.

WeArePregnant11 · 07/10/2016 21:49

I personally really don't like Xander, Sanders or Sandy. At least not for the birth certificate... sorry =(

Alexander Jason. Alexander is a fantastic, international name that works in Switzerland, USA and Scotland. Jason sounds like it would be a nice way to honour her family and is a bonus that you like it too. Congrats on the baby Smile

WeArePregnant11 · 09/10/2016 11:03

That's true, Alexander really is a super international name. The only thing I don't about it is the nickname Sasha.

I knew somebody called Sasha and the thought of people calling our child by this name... makes me actually feel slightly nauseous. :(

OP posts:
Cocoabutton · 09/10/2016 17:43

No-one in the UK would use Sasha, though. It would sound like a girl's name to us.

RiverTam · 09/10/2016 19:29

Yes, they would! Sasha is a fairly well known Russian diminutive of Alexander. And of course it's used in France, too, spelt Sacha I think. However, it's not going to the the top nickname for Alexander in the UK, that's true enough.

sugarplumfairy28 · 09/10/2016 19:35

Nathanael seems like a good name to cover all bases, I like Carter and Eric for middle names. Anything but Jason!

Madbengalmum · 09/10/2016 20:29

Hate jason and chevy.

Unicorn1981 · 09/10/2016 20:52

Are Chevy and Carter real names? Carter makes me think of the band Carter USM! And I know Chevy is due to the car link but your child is the one who has to live with it. Sorry!

WeArePregnant11 · 09/10/2016 21:16

sugar Nathanael is also my favourite (I'm even starting to like Nathaniel. I've been saying it loudly all day and now it sounds normal, even with a German pronounciation...)

My favourite middle name options are Eric, Chevy and Jason

I'm actually starting to like Eric so much that I'm considering agreeing with putting it in the first name list, which would make my DW very happy :)

Uh, Sasha :( maybe it's irrational, but just thinking of any child of mine sharing a nn with that degenerate makes me feel bad. I just associate it with somebody I strongly dislike...

OP posts:
WeArePregnant11 · 09/10/2016 21:24

unicorn Of course they are :) and Carter and especially Chevy are middle name options.
