Ted or Teddy?

We are going for Ted or Teddy - not Theodore, Edward, etc.

It's the only name that we agree on!

Would you pick Ted or Teddy? Teddy could still be Ted and Ted could still be Teddy!

I really like them both, I think I would go for Ted as the official name with Teddy as his nickname.

FWIW I don't get this obsession with have the original full name of the shortened version on the BC. Both my boys have 'full' names on the BC that we never use and I half wonder now why I bothered, I know so many babies who have 'shortened' versions as their official name and they are all perfectly lovely and acceptable names in their own right.

I'm not 100% in the formal-names-on-birth-cert camp; I think the example above of Meg is perfectly fine as a birth certificate name. However, both Ted and Teddy are so inherently childish that it is very limiting to have either as the official name. Ted is slightly less babyish than Teddy (which instantly conjures up cuddly toys in my mind) if those really are the only two choices you are considering. I'd also be prepared for a lifetime of saying 'no, it's not short for anything, just Ted' as it is the type of name that would lead easily to that question.

Sorry but I agree, Teddy is ridiculous! Ted is cool but I'd opt for a full name on birth certificate like Edward, Theodore, perhaps Edwin even.....

Why should she name him Edward or Theodore? If she doesn't like them, she doesn't like them.
Mumsnet is obsessed with people having 'full' versions of names. Sometimes those names are just not liked. Ted is as viable a name as Edward. I find the whole longer name thing very pretentious.
If you like Ted or Teddy just use that, they are perfectly fine.
I'd HATE to be called the longer version of my name, it's plain hideous!!

I think people who comment with the 'He might not appreciate Teddy when he's a grown man' comments are forgetting that when he's a grown man Teddy will likely be a fairly normal name, so therefore he may not mind at all.

It's not that 'shortened' names are awful, but I think they might become very popular. If that's okay with you then Ted is the better option, imo.

Sorry but my first thought is 'soft toy'. Much better to put a full name like Edward/Edmund/Edwin or Theodore on the birth certificate, but if you must then Ted is obviously less babyish than Teddy.

Love ted, I really wanted to call my ds2 but I wasn't allowed. It's becoming more popular though, I know 2 Teddys born at the same time.

Teddy is cute for a baby, but I think the teddy bear connotations make it too cutesy for an adult.

I dislike them both too but then I associate Ted with my dad (who is Theodore). Teddy is childish so Ted but honestly.. .ted is better as a nickname and not the only given name imo. Edward?

Ted is a perfectly acceptable and lovely name in its own right. I never understand this "give them choice" argument.

If you named your kid Craig or Scott there'd be no choice.

My dd is Meg. Not Megan or Margaret. Just Meg. I dislike both of the longer equivalents and would never choose them but I adore Meg.

Ted is great. I do like Teddy but only on a child.

Theodore is hideous IMO.

Teddy was the name we had chosen for a little boy but we are having a little girl - love the name Teddy! And like you, not keen on Edward etc.
I think Teddy - you can shorten it to Ted if he wants to when he's older xx

Call him Theodore or Edward with Ted for short, please. Can't stand this fad for calling children shortenings for full names. Better to go with something outlandish than half a name.
