Opinions on the name Alfie...?

Hello

Our son arrived yesterday morning. We cannot agree on a name! However, we both like Alfie? Just Alfie. Not Alfred, etc.

I agree that Alfie, archie etc are breat names for babies nad children. And probably for a lot of adults. but have a think about various adult scenarios - meeting the bank manager (if they still have them then lol!), BEING the bank manager, being a headmaster or a chairman of a company board, or a politician - if you think that the name you choose for a child will stand up to public positions, then put it on the birth certificate. If you can imagine them needing to use the more "formal" version one day if their life leads them in such a direction, give them something they can revert to and use the nickname for childhood - then they've always got easy options.

(not that you can win - my daughter age 14 doesn't really like her name, doesn't like its nicknames, and wouldn't consider trying any of the zillions of names she could derive from Elizabeth which she has as a middle name ... just changed school which I thought was an opportunity if she really did want to change what she is known as!)

As long as you don't mind if people try and call him Alfred for his entire life, go for it.

Very popular but I don't like it myself. It's an abbreviation of a 'proper' name. Better to officially name him Alfred and call him what you like.

I don't like it but I don't like nicknames on birth certificates but that doesn't bother a lot of people and as long as you are happy, then go for it!

My dog is called Alfie, if he wasn't I would have chosen it. My DS is called Archie

Only if Alfred is on the birth certificate. If not, then no. It's boring because it's so popular and irritates me because it's a nickname.

Nobody else's opinion should matter really. I don't like it - too cute and too popular, but that shouldn't bother you if you both like it! I bet you wouldn't like my name choices!

I know a lot of dog's called Alfie so wouldn't call a child it but it doesn't matter what anybody else thinks. It's your baby!

My grandad was always known as Alfie, even though he was Alfred. I love the name but it was very popular when I had my DS, so he is Joseph Alfie. If you both love it go for it. Congratulations :)

It was my second choice, but dad got his way after the event as I wasn't fit to debate it (although he didn't like it when originally suggested!) Mine is 11 now and we've only met one other in our area. You won't regret it! Mine could never be anything else now. Congratulations!

Not my cup of tea really, but I meet a lot of them at various ages and they all seem to suit it quite well. The popularity might put me off a little too, but it isn't the end of he world. If you and your DP both like it more than anything else, then I would go for it.
