I realise this is a zombie thread and the baby has been born (congrats OP) but just out of interest, why do so many of you hate Hector?! Surely it's a pretty common name in a few languages?

It's not unique. I know a woman called Murphy.

I think it can sound very cool but only with a surname that really goes with it and makes a really ace sounding full name. Like a Bond girl name kind of thing.

Awful. I'm Irish and I dislike this much more than I like Kennedy which seems to be used as a first name too. Murphy is just a common sur name but it's used in jokes to denote 'irish person in this joke'. Really think it'd be a bad choice. Delaney, Kinsella, Gillespie, Bellamy,,,, some sur names have a bit of oooh la la! Use one of those!

FYI I had a little boy last November and we called him Murphy, in our eyes he is perfect (and yes we do call him Smurf as a nick name) Smile

No, don't just "go with what you want", consider the affect on your unborn child a they are the ones who are going to have to live with your decision. Why saddle them with a shit name? (And I don't mean Hector. Although I am from the Hector's House generation and know no Real Life ones so it will always be a cartoon dog to me!)

I know a little Hector, and while it's never going to be one of my favourite names, it doesn't seem to causing him any problems.

Plus Hector is a classical boys name, although the classical Hector from the Trojan Wars didn't meet a happy end.

What's your surname, OP? Would you give that to your daughter as a first name? Would you call her Bloggs? Jones? Davies? Smith? Braithwaite? Barker? Hodgson? Because that's pretty much exactly what you're proposing.
