I prefer Stephane for a boy.

Strokethefurrywall · 19/09/2016 22:31

I love Stephanie for a girl, and I'd absolutely use it with Stevie as a nickname (slight Stevie Nicks fan here).

gratesnakes · 19/09/2016 18:36

Stephen is my favourite name.
And it's super rare in schools round here.

Stephanie is not so classic but I like it. It's retro.

Alternatively you could use Stephens as well as their dad's surname. Double barelled. I regret not doing that.

Both fine but not for siblings!

stefania is lovely mind

MitzyLeFrouf · 19/09/2016 15:21

Stephen; I like how it sounds, I like that its a Classic name, I like it's meaning, I like the saint Stephen associated with it. However I'm not a fan of names which have been overused.

Stephanie; I absolutely love the way it sounds; feminine but very bright and spicy, not overly soft but not hard and stodgy sounding either. I also think that Stephie makes a pretty nickname, (no reason why you'd have to use Steph, you could insist on Stephie). But, I really don't like both how it's been very overused, and how it's dated in the past. I think it would seem like a middle aged lady name to a child and the people around her as she grew up and then was a woman, and that wouldn't be a pleasing and helpful image for her. You could get round this perhaps, by using Stephie as a nickname.

What about using Stephanotis, which is a plant with pretty white flowers, instead, and using Stephie as a nickname for that? That why you get beyond the oldfashionedness and over popularity of Stephanie both formally and in everyday nickname, and your child could even use Stephanie as a nn if she likes that, (you could use it yourself sometimes?)? Or, what about putting a different feminine spin on Stephen/Stephan by using Stephanissia, (very fussy and frilly if you like fussy and frilly), or - I think this is Italian, I heard it somewhere and loved it - Stephanozza? But, of course that's just what I would do.

Sarcasm my mother thought she would adopt a more sophisticated approach to spelling the name as Stefanie with an f....pleased to "meet" you

pieceofpurplesky · 19/09/2016 07:35

Stephen - Pronounved Stee-ven Stephan - pronounced steff- Ann

Which one!

treaclesoda · 19/09/2016 07:17

I know quite a few Stephanies and Stephens and none of them have their names shortened to Steph or Steve, either by themselves or other people so I don't think it's inevitable. Although it's obviously not an issue for middle names.

Smooshface · 19/09/2016 07:10

They are lovely names, and don't worry about middle names really, I never use my kids ones for anything, my eldest is 7 and doesn't know how to spell hers properly yet! I know that is me being rubbish but I didn't realise until she sat her sats! Full marks in English despite spelling her name differently and wrong on both papers!

SarcasmMode · 19/09/2016 07:07

I haven't met another Stefanie one

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 19/09/2016 00:35

It's also very international what with all the Stefans and Stephanes etc. in various European countries.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 19/09/2016 00:34

I'd say Stephen is a pretty classic name. Saint from the New Testament, so a fair bit of history behind it! I suppose it depends how your classify 'classic' though.

Stephanie is a bit dated but I quite like it!

AdaLovelacesCat · 19/09/2016 00:32

there might not be many Stephens in England these days but there are plenty of Steffans in Wales.
IMO Stephanie is a great name.

leccybill · 19/09/2016 00:30

Plenty of Stevens with a v round my way thanks to Steven Gerrard.
Shortened to Ste of course.

I like Stephanie. It's strong. Reminds me of the business reporter on BBC breakfast, I like her.

LovelyBranches · 19/09/2016 00:21

Stephanie ruined for me by a school bully but Stephen as a middle name would be nice.

Starsinthedark · 18/09/2016 22:18

Very 80s!

Onedayinthesun · 18/09/2016 22:15

I'm Stefanie and rarely meet other Stefanie' Stephanie's or Steph's
I like my name Wink

SarcasmMode · 18/09/2016 22:09

I'm Stefanie [with an F] I quite like it.

minatiae · 18/09/2016 20:39

I like Stephen but not Stephanie

RiaOverTheRainbow · 18/09/2016 20:35

Stephanie is great and I quite like Stephen. Both perfectly fine for middle names.

crje · 18/09/2016 20:27

They were my twin dolls names when I was eight.

They are a bit dated, not classic names.

GottaGetThisDone · 18/09/2016 20:27

I like Stephanie no Stevie
As middle names they are fine - my DS1 middle name is Stephen and had he been a girl it would have been Stephanie Smile

Chip86 · 18/09/2016 20:21

My Stephanie is 8 months and always gets comments on her name. She is known as Sessie as that is how her big sis says stephie but there are loads of nn
Anie
Stevie
Effie

Loafingaround · 18/09/2016 11:44

I love Stephanie! Think its feminine, individual, graceful and light, have no idea how anyone could think it sounds harsh??! Steph/ Steffi are really nice nns too IMO.
