Romany? Nn Romy

Pretty much set on this name for our daughter due in December, but having seen someone else mention it somewhere, people have commented they would avoid it because of the connection to travellers.
Do you make the same connection?
My oh is a settled traveller, would you think it strange for a traveller child to be named Romany? (I won't take offence, genuinely want to know what you think)

I thought it might be a bit too nicknamey mathanxiety
Romany is a more grown up alternative, should she want one when she is an adult.

Why not just use Romy on the BC?

scoobyloobyloo · 15/09/2016 01:59

Ramona?

Adarajames · 15/09/2016 01:54

Sorry, missed off big you actuality asked about, no I wouldn't make assumption that was a travellers name

Adarajames · 15/09/2016 01:53

I love it, a really pretty name, and the full version as opposed to Romy which not so keen on.

SanityAssassin · 14/09/2016 22:35

Romola?

MephistoMarley · 14/09/2016 22:27

I really like the name Romany but I wouldn't use it if I wasn't connected with Romany gypsy culture but since you are, it's lovely

In that case I think it'd be a nice tribute to his heritage. All the best OP

I know there's a difference & I shouldn't really have calles him a traveller, he is of romany descent.

I'm part Romany and the only people called Romany I've met aren't Romany.

You say your DH is a traveller though? As in Irish traveller? That's a completely different race to Romany.

dotdotdotmustdash · 14/09/2016 18:55

Is your OH from an Irish traveller background or a Romany gypsy one? There is a difference and Romany wouldn't have any relevance unless he comes from the latter.

0pti0na1 · 14/09/2016 15:33

I would make the traveller connection with Romany but not Romy.

GoldPlatedBacon · 14/09/2016 14:10

I would assume a Romany is of Romany heritage but I wouldn't make that assumption with Romy. Romany is a very pretty name

CancellyMcChequeface · 14/09/2016 14:01

I wouldn't associate Romy with travellers, particularly.

I've never come across Romany used as a given name before, so if I heard it my first thought would be of the ethnic group, like Paperdoll

MrsCaecilius · 14/09/2016 13:15

I'd immediately associate Romany with Romany gypsy. But would have no connotation with Romy.

Given your heritage its a very pretty name!

PaperdollCartoon · 14/09/2016 13:14

Should add that's not necessarily a problem, it sounds nice as a name, just that's the thought process my brain went through!

PaperdollCartoon · 14/09/2016 13:13

Romy is pretty. Romany I would associate with travellers, but it would also seem to me like calling your child Irish or Jewish or something, it's the name of an ethnic group not a person.

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 14/09/2016 13:12

I love it, I wouldn't expect it to be a traveller name. If anything the Romany's I have met have been quite posh!

Bigfam · 14/09/2016 13:08

EllenDegenerate have sent you a pm

Romy has no connection to travellers IME.

Romany does but if your OH is a settled traveller surely it's positive to honour his heritage?

eurochick · 14/09/2016 12:10

I would make the traveller connection.

Bigfam · 14/09/2016 12:08

No they wouldn't take it as an insult, I do know that mil doesn't like it though, but not for that reason.
She doesn't like the name we chose for dd3 either.

OP posts:
JaneAustinAllegro · 14/09/2016 11:53

I love the name, and knew someone called Romany years ago - as a child of course I never made the connection. Romy on its own also lovely.

Big q would be what would DH's family make of it? will they take it in the tribute sense you intend? I've no idea if you could unintentionally insult them???
