Romany? Nn Romy

Pretty much set on this name for our daughter due in December, but having seen someone else mention it somewhere, people have commented they would avoid it because of the connection to travellers.
Do you make the same connection?
My oh is a settled traveller, would you think it strange for a traveller child to be named Romany? (I won't take offence, genuinely want to know what you think)

I wouldn't have made that connection straight away, although it is a pretty clear connection.
However it is a nice name, and Romy is a lovely nn too. I think it is totally useable.

It's a lovely name. It reminds me of my NDN daughter when I was a kid, she was Romany, no romany heritage I'm aware of though. She'd be in her mid-30s by now.

Should anyone make judgmental and bigoted comments about the name and/ or perceived 'negative' connections, well, they need to educate themselves about Romany and traveller heritage anyway.

Is a reflection on them...and not a good one!

Congratulations! I have a Romany and get loads of compliments on her name - fairly sure no one would think we were of Romany heritage (we aren't)! Thought she'd be a romy but she is Nonie, Roro, Rosie at times, and mostly the full name. Never a snide comment made. She'll be pleased to hear there is another baby Romany in the world! There were 8 in the U.K. the year she was born, and we have also met a couple randomly.

Baby Romany arrived on the 3rd of December & we're using the nn Romy (Dd3 can't pronounce her full name!)

I like Romany (and much prefer it over Romy or Romily).

I do associate it with Romany Gypsies, as others have said, but i also like it enough to have it on my favourites list even though i have no connection to travellers :)

I think it is a bit odd as a name, because it is an adjective with the meaning "of Roma origin". It is similar to calling your daughter "English" or give your son the name "Italian". I like the sound, but I think it doesn't work as a name. I would go for Romy then.

I would go with Romy, I think it sounds nicer. I'd immediately presume you were Romany if you used the full version. Which is fine, just depends how much emphasis you want to put on her heritage. I have a 'heritage' type name and sometimes I really wish I didn't (lots of ethnic jokes, mispronounciations, people trying to speak to me in languages I don't even understand, you get the picture ;))

I've always wondered if the name Romy is pronounced Row-Me or Romm-E? It always seems like a made-up name to me...

I've never heard of Romany as a given name. Personally I prefer Romilly or Romana.

Without any Romany heritage it would seem strange, but given her father is Romany I think it's lovely.
Lots of travellers where I live, quite a few little girls called Romany. I think it's lovely!
