YoungGirl - Sylvia's Plath's son was Nicholas, wasn't he (Nick and the Candlestick)? She did write a collection of poetry called Ariel though - I think the reference was Shakespearean in her case.

Would Arieh (ah-ree-ay)be acceptable if you're after a Jewish name? Only one letter difference . Can't get on board with Ariel for all the reasons above - detergent/girly

It's like calling your son Elsa, Aurora or Cinderella. Really, it's that popular amongst girls. And if the girls are all into disney princesses, you are sure all the boys will know of it.

I think the playground will associate with the mermaid princess, not the washing powder. I have a 5 yo. It's a disney princess. Everyone knows that.

Not sure how many children know about washing powder.

I'm someone who has the name of a superhero sidekick and that followed me until I left school (drunk people still mention it) so I think TLM is just too popular to get away with it and it's such a shame

I love it, it was in my short list for DS. And don't even think about the washing up powder because children really don't tend to know washing powder brands, it's not as popular as it used to be for washing anyway

Still The Little Mermaid ruined it for me Sad Literally the only reason we didn't go with it and I was gutted as I think it's such a strong male name!

In a typical UK playground, kids will assume that he's named after the Disney Princess.

Little mermaid- I wouldn't- I've got a weird name and after 40+ years of explaining it to others I would stick with something less problematic.

I'm not sure. I quite like it, especially if you're after a Jewish name, but I think you will have people pronouncing it as you do the washing powder, instead of Ahh-ri-al. Also there might be some boy/girl confusion.

that is all very well Ellen but your average playground is full of 'plebeians' who will associate it only with washing powder.
