Quick question - if someone already had a son called John, would you think it odd if they called a new baby boy Jack?

Jack is definitely the nn for John so it would be a bit odd

I think it's a nice pairing. My dad was called John and I have never heard of Jack being a nickname for John.

Yes - although I do know sisters called Catherine and Katie, so I suppose it does happen!

I think, perhaps incorrectly, that this is generational. Older people would see it as odd but as time has passed they have become two distinct names .

Saying that, I wouldn't do it. How about James as a similar alternative?

Yeah it's the same. My uncle goes by Jack OR John depending on who he's speaking to

Odd as to me they are basically the same name but I know people use Jack as a proper name so you could I suppose.

Personally, yes, I would because jack is a nickname for John as far as I am aware.
