Jack and John

Quick question - if someone already had a son called John, would you think it odd if they called a new baby boy Jack?

I don't see them as the same name. However would it be easier to have different initial or mail gets mixed up (might not be a problem now everything's electronic but there is still snail mail.)

I don't agree with most, traditionally yes same name but growing up I never thought they were same name, I'd do it

Perhaps then DH is not content with having one son named after him, and wants two mini Maynard namesakes! I shall have to tell him not to be so vain Grin

I have two brothers in my Scout Group called John and Jack and it did cause me to raise an eyebrow.

Beaten by my Mum meeting triplets called John, Sean and Jack!

No, it's generational. No one called John these days gets called Jack (that I know of). So now they are two separate names.

If you like traditional names, I think David is in need of a revival. It seems to have lost its main-stream status. Dave or Davey nicknames, fantastic name.

Mrs Joey Maynard, you must recall that your husband Dr Maynard was a John who was always known as Jack! I think there'd be far too much scope for confusion, with people thinking John was Jack, or that Jack was really John.

My mum always said that Jack was a pet form of James, from Jacobus, I suppose, so it often seems odd to me that people associate it with John. I wouldn't bat an eyelid at siblings with these two names but I realise I'm vastly in the minority.

My ex mil was called Gwendolynn. Her sister was Lynn. Fil chose the names.

DH has been trying to convince me that this would be totally fine and not odd at all, but I was very dubious about that.
