Hello! Trying to work out whether this name works for a girl. It's a Welsh name, and DH is Welsh so it sounds lovely when he says it but not sure how it will work in Glasgow where we live.

Live in N Wales and don't know any one with that name Rhyl is not a very nice town anyway...... Lots of lovely Welsh Girls names instead

Agree with a PP who said it sounds like 'hyll' which is welsh for ugly. I'm from North Wales, never heard of that name.

Yup, as jiggly said. So both 'Ll's in 'Llanelli' would be the 'chlll' for example

Also, just in case in comes up in your conversations, 'dd' in a word/ name has a a 'th' sound, again, regardless of where it falls. Worth pointing out because non-Welsh speakers would think that it would be like the English letter 'd' which is totally different. Have you had any other Welsh baby name ideas? I love Idris, but obviously, for a boy. Nerys is a lovely girl's name?

Yes Ch, Dd, Ff, Ng, Ll, Ph, Rh, Th all pretty much sound the same always regardler of where in the word they are so,

Rhywbeth (Welsh for something) the phoinc doubles sound the same in Rhyw (Welsh for sex) and llaeth/llefrith (Welsh for milk southern/northern)

Thanks for clearing that one up - I did have my doubts about it! So LL is pronounced the same way no matter where in the word it falls? Like the LL in Llanxxxxx? Cos I can pronounce that sound. at 'clhhhh'!

But Rhyl is a complete dump these days. If you want to name your child after a Welsh town, at least choose somewhere nice surely?

I'm from south wales, don't do it, it's not a name, It's a place name. And the Ll sounds is quite a harsh sound, suppose you could always go with Llanelli?

There are so many pretty Welsh girls name like Haf which means summer.

Lol scribblegirl in fairness I went and was fine but I do agree with other posters it sounds like the place not a name. But saying that some people use places for a name Rio, brooklyn, Orlando etc it's up to you how much you love it.

I'm from North West Wales and have never heard of Rhyll as a girl's name! Rhyl would be bad enough but Rhyll would actually be pronounced like the Welsh word for Ugly with a sort of r sound at the start. Don't do it!

RE: Correct pronounciation: the 'll' at the end would be pronounced as a 'clhhhh' which is a really hard sound for some other nations to replicate! I would say it like 'Rhilccchh' sort of thing.

Can you give an example of how you think it should be pronouced? A Welsh speaker once told me that "ll" at the end of a word or after a vowel was pronounced like an "f", which, if correct, would suggest your name is pronounced a bit like "Riff". I'm not sure that's what you had in mind!

(Hopefully a Welsh speaker can confirm whether this final LL=F thing is correct or not)
