I think it's fine to name a child after their father, but only the first born child. I can imagine your older son would feel he wasn't special enough to get his daddy's name.

I'm not normally one for allowing children any say in siblings names but in this case, I think you are doing the right thing by listening to his wishes. My view may be reinforced by the fact I hate the tradition of naming sons after fathers, among other reasons because it makes one child more 'special'. I would not however allow your son any further say in the child's name, nor use his name as a middle name. Selecting a name for this brand new individual is your responsibility as parents alone.

I always think the name Daniel very similar to Samuel - similar ending, similar shortening, etc.

Lemuel.

Porcupinetree · 31/08/2016 14:17

What do you call your daughters?

I'm having a horrid vision of

Son: "our special boy"
Daughter 1:
Daughter 2: "The girls"
Daughter 3:

I think your son is right and you are right to consider that. I hope you can find a name you like as much. We had lots of names we liked but couldn't use for various reasons - I think it's nice for children to have their own names anyway. What is your son's name? Sorry if you've already said and I've missed it. Could you use ds1's name as a middle name, to help him feel connected to the baby? It's not for me personally, but I know people who have done that.

I think Simon is nice and underused at the moment, I knew some nice ones. Ethan?

I think she's letting the ten year old have some input because children have feelings too and some parents like to take them into account. It's not for everyone, of course.

OhTheRoses · 31/08/2016 12:16

I know a family with a Samuel. Five others called: Joseph, Benjamin, David, Lewis, Abraham (known as Alfie).

The Sam's I know have brothers called: Max, Jack, Alfie, Ben, Toby, Thomas.

I can see your son's point and wouldn't. It crosses the love boundary.

Congratulations though.

LunaLoveg00d · 31/08/2016 12:09

Why are you letting a 10 year old have any say in the name of a baby?

MimiSunshine · 31/08/2016 08:57

Haven't got a band suggestion but would suggest you subtly start referring to him as your 'first special boy' rather than 'only' then if the baby is a boy he can be the 'second special boy'.

I can understand your sons feelings but he sounds like he's been treated as the prince of the family and if he's about to be usurped by a royal pretender (as it will feel to him as babies get a lot of attention and he may not have cared when they were girls) then it could get difficult between them especially when his dad is holding the baby

I can see where your son s coming from, a kid may well feel that it is special to get your dads name and feel very left out if the new baby gets it.

How about

Isaac
Nate/ Nathaniel
Joel
Ezra
Eli
Asher
Elijah
Jacob
Reuben
Josiah
Lucas

loving the suggestions , thank you :)
Yes, totally dont want to upset our first son. It's not even that i want to name this one After his father, it's just a name that ive always liked that his dad happens to share lol
Certainly not worth it at the cost of our ten years old feelings tho.. so trying to search for a name, I can think of about ten girls name i like, despite already having three girls, find boys names so much harder !

Agree that it is normally the first son named after the father, I see your DS's point there.

Gideon (George Osborne may have wounded this name a bit, but it is still nice Grin )
Noah
Joshua
Theo (not Biblical)

nemno · 30/08/2016 21:24

I totally see your son's issue. Even if he doesn't articulate it he will feel he wasn't worth the most special name but his brother is worth it. There would be 2 Samuels and him. Poor chap.

Nathan/Nathaniel
Dominic
Frederick
Jonathon

I think the kid has a point TBH.

CRazzyyAce · 30/08/2016 21:11

It is normally tradition that if you name after the father its the first born son, I wouldn't even if is already upset.
