Noah - for a girl?

If this is annoying for you now, imagine how your daughter will feel with a lifetime of it. I like it as a girl's name but regardless of if the debate is welcomed or not she will have people throughout her life questioning why she has a boys name. Other people's reactions are something you can't change.

Slow typer. Everyone else said it better. It's all well and goof to be Right On and Oh So Ahead Of The Times, but she's the one who has to live with it.

I actually do not even like Noah for a boy.

Purple I'm in Wales and Noa is how Noah (as in man in bible with ark) is spelt in Welsh. I know at least 8 boys called Noa.

Everyone's circle of reference is different. To me Noa is a boy, just because that is my experience. It doesn't mean that Noa isn't a perfectly valid girl's name.

Turn that around and there is no reason why Noah isn't a perfectly valid girl's name either.

Are you that entrenched in keeping the h that you want to subject your child to years of misunderstandings and tedious explanations? Frankly I don't think it's a great name for a boy, but it's awful for a girl.

If you can't contemplate Noa, think of another name. Maybe make Kate the first name instead of the second?

Starting a thread called "Noah - for a girl?" kind of invites the debate you say you don't want to have, op.

Don't like the name for either sex personally tbh.

What SoupDragon* said. Just use the female spelling. I personally don't like it, but picking a name and insisting it be spelled the wrong way, then getting upset people assume it's a boy... Just bizarre. What an odd reaction.

Call her Noa.

I always wonder, when life can be tough enough, why people make choices that might make life even a tiny bit harder for their child than they need to be.

My niece is 40 and has a male name. She was left stranded at an airport recently because the driver sent to meet her assumed she had missed the plane because there were only women waiting.......

I wouldn't use noa or noah...not just because if the spelling...You phone up for a hair appointment name noa/noah expecting a boy...no matter what the bible said most people in this country expect a noah to be a boy..

I'm a teacher so I see a lot of children's names. I've never seen a boy called Noa, I've never seen a girl called Noah.

Use it if you want but be prepared for your daughter to be constantly telling people that she is not a boy.

A quick google shows that
1 - "Noah" is derived from the Hebrew "Noach", so "Noah" is not even how the name "should" be spelt if you are going back to biblical references.
2 - Noa has a different origin, meaning and pronunciation in the original Hebrew.

I'm not liking it for a girl so much. Reason being is this: Noah sounds a lot like 'Do you KNOW HER?' Know her - Noah or Noa. Ummm.... that's what I hear everything I hear the name Noah. Plus it would actually be a her if it was used as a girls name.

Kate Noa is lovely! Noa for the first name if you really love it but I would defiantly think twice. Most of her name would spell the name 'No' (with either spelling...that would put me off).

But both are unisex, just these days more common as a boy's name.

To me Dylan is a boy's name, but plenty of girls are called it! Likewise Meredith.

My thoughts? Don't love it as a name for a boy (or Noa for a girl) but it's fine.

But calling a girl Noah? What everyone else said. You can pat yourself on the back about how alternative and biblically accurate you are, whilst poor little Noah deals with a lifetime of administrative confusion and playground teasing. Until she changes it by deed poll.

So on you go. From the tone of your posts you clearly have your mind made up anyway.

My sister was given a boys name/unisex name that is used for boys 99% of the time. It caused her no end of trouble with it being assumed she was a boy when reading the name e.g. being put with all the boys during school activities.

It may well technically be unisex but it isn't used in that way. It would be different if Noah was so popular for boys but it is.

You know how you have people telling you Noah is a boys name and you "state" it's unisex because the Bible?

So imagine having that conversation in real life with people for the next ten years on a daily basis and people pointing out other "statements" from the bible about rape, slaves, etc.

Do you really want to be having this conversation over and over? It will get pretty heated sometimes. Mostly because everyone agrees languages evolve and today Noah is known as a boys' name. You and your daughter will not singlehandedly change that perception.

The problem with Noah for a girl is that it is so popular for boys at the moment that almost everyone she will come across will assume she is a boy, or if they are aware it's a girls name, they will spell it as Noa. it's your decision of course but it's not unreasonable for people to tell you this given that you asked for opinions.

Leaving that aside though the more I say it, the more Noah Kate sounds like a medicine.

Or rather, why would you set your child up for a life time of hassle?
