I love the name Benedict but I do think most people will think it's a made up spelling as its not one they are familiar with. And oh dear - now someone has pointed out Bendy Dik and you've mentioned the surname I think that might be worse - Bendy Dickless?!

my Benedykt was universally called Benski on account of his Polish surname.

this nickname was entirely endearing in his case but worth keeping in mind I guess...

We did consider these (removed all names that have Polish spellings):

  • Adrian
  • Daniel
  • Ernest
  • Gabriel

Love Izaak too, but the same issue with the spelling, isn't it? Sad

What is the Polish form of Benjamin? Would that be a goer?

In my experience all the little Benedicts become Ben when they start at school.. Benjamin's become Ben or Benji.

I like the name Benedict ..I'm a cumberbatch fan and I have a nephew with it as a middle name ..personally I'd spell it the English way but just because it's easier on the eye iywim

Honestly, quite glad I didn't make it obvious! It's nice to realise how many people will actually struggle with it (although, I agree, should have said Blush) surname is Lis.

Might try and find another name to consider as well. I didn't think of bendy dick either, not sure how many people would?

I do like Benedict and as you are polish your spelling is ok in fact absolutely correct I assume it his with a polish surname? . If not seriously go for traditional spelling.

Yes please ignore my try hard comment Blush I'm not a fan of unique spellings but of course it's appropriate for you to choose a Polish spelling with you being Polish and all. You could just say 'it's Benedykt with a y and a k' when someone's writing it down to save you having to spell it out every time.
Like I say it's a very nice, classic name Smile

Benedict is lovely. Not so sure about Benedyct but if it is a traditional spelling in your culture go for it!

I love the name it was on my short list for both my boys spelt benedict but we are not polish.

There's a lot of threads around here lately where the OP announces an unusually spelt name, let's people comment, and then reveals it's actually the correct spelling in a different country, that they are from.

Is it so hard to say "Hi. We're thinking g Benedykt. We're Polish and we'd like to use the traditional Polish spelling."?

You might get good quality replies immediately then.

As you can see, OP, to English people it looks like a made-up spelling of Benedict. Grin

But it has a nice sound, and Benedict XVI serving as Pope so recently, plus Benedict Cumberbatch, means Benedict is relatively common around where I live. Most people would be able to get their heads around Benedykt, but you'll got lots of misspellings.

It's a lovely name, people may not realise the spelling is Polish and you may have to correct it but that is up to you as to how bothered you are by that.

If you are Polish then go for it.

Odd question but do you have an obviously Polish surname? If not then people may assume it's a unique spelling.

I really like the name Benedict (and as you are Polish, it would be appropriate to use the Polish spelling!). Just beware that english people might want to pronounce it Ben -eh- dykt instead of Ben- eh - dikt just because of how it's written.
