Looking for some help please. Dd2 is 4 days old and I have my heart set on Nell (Penelope) but husband isn't keen (he could maybe live with Nell but not Penelope). We've contemplated and discarded Dorothy/dot, prudence/pru and Josephine. He likes Mabel and margot. Are there any names you can suggest that we may agree on?

Edie and Nell are nickname names and go well together. I know a Frankie and Nell (full names are Francesca and Eleanor but both girls despise their full names).

OP how about Noelle, you could still call her Nell.
Perhaps your DH will consider this.

Norah?

leoniethelioness · 20/08/2016 15:50

My cat is called Nell. She came pre-named age 4 from the Cats Protection. I am disappointed to have to cross it off my baby name list! It's a great name. I like it as a standalone name.

SteviebunsBottrittrundle · 20/08/2016 13:48

I would definitely go with one of Sophronia or Blinkowl's options for Nell. There are so many lovely names which can be shortened to Nell which I absolutely love as a nn. Maybe Leonora too? It's one of my favourite girl names which I would shorten to Nell if we ever had another DD.

I'm with your DH though and don't really like Penelope at all, (sorry - it's the two hard 'p' sounds I think, makes it sound all spitty to my ear).

manicinsomniac · 20/08/2016 12:51

Agree with other options for Nell as a nickname (Eleanor and Fenella work especially well I think). I wouldn't go with Nell as standalone as it's very marmite and there's absolutely nothing she can do with it if she doesn't like it.

I think Nell can stand alone, or use Eleanor or Helen, or variants of them.

Ricecreespees · 20/08/2016 08:08

Esther? Edith? What is the other Dd called if you don't mind me asking?
I think Helena abs Eleanor would be beautiful with nell as a nickname! Congratulations btw sweetie! X Flowers

blinkowl · 20/08/2016 06:31

Edie
Millie
Etta
Matilda
Tabitha

mrsbee2be · 20/08/2016 06:24

Go with Nell, just Nell.... I love it....was top of my list until I found out I'd be having a boy.

Rainbowrhythms · 20/08/2016 06:23

Just call baby Nell then if you both like it?

My baby has the "nickname" version of a name. Neither of us liked the long version.

blinkowl · 20/08/2016 06:23

Cross post!

blinkowl · 20/08/2016 06:22

How about Nell as a NN for:

Helena
Helen
Antonella
Ornella
Cornelia
Ellen

MsKite · 20/08/2016 06:20

I was going to say Martha too

Sophronia · 20/08/2016 06:16

How about other names that can have Nell as a nn, like..

Eleanor
Ellen
Helena
Fenella
Antonella
Helen
Anneliese
Cornelia

DollyBarton · 20/08/2016 06:11

Can I suggest Martha? It's very sweet and seems similar to both your preferences.

temporarilyjerry · 20/08/2016 06:08

How about Eleanor with nn Nell?

DropYourSword · 20/08/2016 02:39

Why not just name her Nell if you both like it, and forget about Penelope
