Fauve means wild animal in French. That's enough to put me off, even though it also means tawny. Or beige.

I don't think any name is pretentious, saying so is insinuating a baby is pretending above their station because of their name, what bullshit. If you like it go for it. fauve will grow into it, difficult names can be a blessing, think Johnny cash a boy named sue.

But as a name - no, sorry, don't like it. Just not an attractive sound IMO, not worth the hassle.

Confused by previous poster querying pronunciation though - for me, mauve and clove (and fauve) all rhyme. How do you pronounce mauve?

I thought it was pronounced to rhyme with Mauve! I think you'd get that a lot. And I don't say Mauve to rhyme with clove.

Loved Mistral's Daughter and therefore have a fondness for Fauve.

I'd like to re read all the Judith Krantz novels but I'm scared I'll be disappointed now I'm not a teenager, like I was when I re read Lace!
