Noa and Marlowe

I know the general consensus on these names on MN will be that they're hideous - BUT I love them both.
Some friends have 'stolen' our name - when I say that, I do say it with jest. DH and I had both settled on Thea pretty much and then asked our friends (due 7weeks before us) if they had any thoughts about names and low and behold.... THEA!
So these are new names to the list... I think they're quite cool, without being too weird.

When I hear Marlowe my immediate association is the playwright Christopher Marlowe, so to me it is quite masculine.

What about Athena? I love it but couldn't use it due to our surname. Had the Thea sound in it too! X

I like surnamey names Confused Probably why I like it.
Norah reminds of that whiney Norah Jones song.
Margot reminds me of fussy old women, spelling reminds me of Maggot!! Ha!
Quite like Cleo though, fairly strong and quite cool. Will see if DH likes it

Noah: Do you know her? 'KNOW HER?' that is what I hear every time I hear Noah. It's wrecked it for me. The name is soft and that's nice but the first two letters spell 'No' so then I feel like I dislike it even more. Plus it feels like it very now to name a girl Noah but will it still be cool in the future or just odd? I don't know. I wouldn't want to be called Noah. Norah is nicer!

Marlowe is better but I see it as a surname not so much as a first name. Margot is better! :)

Failing all of that Thea is divine. It's such a shame it's been taken off the shelf. What about Cleo? Same kind of feel as Thea (as they are both greek goodness's I think... will need to double check that)

I would but I've got an aversion to two middle names, I find them unnecessary especially if there is no connection to anything/anyone. I've got two and never mention one.

To avoid ASS, why not chose a second middle name? Then you could have Alba Smile

My dd is called Marlow. Lo for short... it really suits her. We had a few other names picked out but none of them seemed right.

All a bit "different" but people just get used to it. Also, everyone has a chance to name their own child - they have nothing to do with what you name yours. I'm currently expecting another DC and if it's a girl it will be Cissie after my nan. I like your name choices OP and funnily enough considered Noa but DH didn't like the religious connotations.

I really like Noa too and have been thinking about choosing it if my bump turns out to be a girl. I did like Marlowe when I was thinking of names for my first but it seems to have got quite popular lately and I'm less keen now.

Erin was on my list for a long time but eventually felt a bit 'meh' about it.
Cleo is ok but don't like Lucia.
I guess I have fairly specific ideas of what I want a name to be...
Feminine, cool, but not overly used.

Other names I have on my list but not convince by -
Phoebe - still like
Alba - dodgy initials, but love
Sadie - too many S' in babys full name. But love.
Tallulah - apparently a bit stripper, but love!
Leni - both still quite like it.

Think I'll have to save Alba or Sadie for potential baby #2 when we can use a different middle name.

I love Noa for a girl though strangely not as keen on Noah for a boy. I was in a cafe recently and there was an approx three year old Noa explaining to the waitress authoritatively the difference between the boy ('with an h') and girl Noa - think her mum was German so maybe it is used in Germany too.

I don't like Marlowe at all, Noa much nicer.

Thea is nice but I totally get the wish for your baby to have her own name - I would also go off a name if friends used first. Also, although Thea is not very common my dd's class is full of similar sounding names - Rhea, Leah, Tia, Mia etc!

I do like Marlowe too btw. Sienna Miller's daughter is called that.

It's weird strange - I despise Noah for a boy! But some how find the Noa female version quite pretty and feminine.

Just a gentle reminder that it's not you who's going to get the odd looks. Or have to explain "yes, it is usually a boy's name, but it's a girl's name too spelled without the H"..ad infinitum.....................

EricBana - I love Alba but we are using an S middle name and our surname begins with S also - initials would be ASS!
Do also like Thalia

I know we could move away from said friends but I kind of want a fairly unique name and having a friend with a child of the same name just makes the name lose its appeal, despite me loving the name.
I don't see the problem with an Israeli name - plenty of people use Scottish/Welsh/Irish etc names without actually being from there. And the gender confusion will only be in the written form, not much different from a lot of the unisex names out there already, it's just a less common one.

If by some miracle they decide against Thea in the end, it may well be back in the game.

Why not use the name you love?

  • as others have said your friend no matter how close could move away or you could and it is your friends daughter who will bear the name and she may move away as well. It is your daughter who will have the name (over which she has no choice) but if I was her and grew up to find out she could have been called Thea but instead is called Marlowe (sounds like a dog's name to me) because you were friends with some unknown person I would be a bit upset. I was called after a friend of my mother's and I dislike it now but I am stuck with it.
