I think people get Romeo confused with Casanova. Not sure why they think a Romeo would be some sort of dashing playboy when he was actually a suicidal teenager with stalker tendencies!

It's OK, but everyone would think they were original with saying "Wherefore art thou Romeo?" as a joke. It would get very tiresome.

I'm quite open minded about names but I would also have to say no to Romeo (sorry). It just isn't my cup of tea and I would think of the play first, a Casanova type / 'stud' / ladies' man, the beckhams and then so solid crew. It's strange as Juliet wouldn't be associated with romance for me but Romeo is in my head for some reason.

I know an Italian one and it's pronounced Ro-MAY-o which sounds better. Still wouldn't use it though.

You have to specify now. Apparently the Americans have started using Aubrey as a girls name and there was a thread earlier in the week about how this is a completely normal. Any name can be for everyone now.

In my teen dreamy Shakespeare phase I always wanted to name a boy Balthazar, Romeo's servant.

I'm not a fan, the modern association is of a guy who gets around and is a heartbreaker, which I wouldn't like. The Shakespeare association is that on an idiotic, murdering and suicidal teenager so again not great.

But it does sound nice.

Aside from the obvious Romeo & Juliet connection to me it just makes me think a 'Romeo' is a bit of a stud/ wanted by all the girls, a bit of a player etc. I think that unless your son is guaranteed to be rich/ famous (eg: Romeo Beckham) it could be a hard name to carry off. I could imagine a popular, handsome boy the girls all fancy managing to pull off the name Romeo but for an average boy, a boy who isn't a typical 'lad,' an academic boy etc it might lead to teasing etc.

If you like the Ro sound how about Ronan, Roman, Roland or Rowan? Or if you like the eo how about Leo or Theo?
