Not pregnant but my DD (6) told me that if she has a son (a long time into the future I hope) she is going to call him Ian. Grin What do you think? Hopelessly outdated or due for a revival?

I know two lovely Ians but I really dislike the name, it just sounds like a noise. Sorry. Much nicer names out there.

I LOVE Colin as a name, made even better by all the Colin's I have known have been utterly lovely men. DH was a firm no though.. I think Kevin will have a revival at some point. Unsure about Barry.

It won't go extinct in Scotland - it was used 557 times in 2013 and 571 times in 2014, either as a first or middle name.

I had no idea it was a name that is so disliked! I know 2 amazing men called Ian - both early 40s.
What's wrong with it???

My brother's an Ian, he gets E, or Ewock. He's quite nerdy, i've always thought he suited his name.

Just read that Ian is ones of the names predicted to go 'Extinct'. Only 21 babies have been named it this year.

DD3 age 12 wants Geofrey or Godfrey if she has a boy.. So I suspect that is what our grandchildren will be named Smile

Ian or Iain is a fairly common name at Primary School in Scotland, I can think of 2 or 3 in my kids age groups. Owen and Euan fairly common too.

All are great names - will suit people at all ages of life and equally appropriate for the Prime Minister or a street sweeper. Much better than a "trendy" or yoo-neek name.

When I was a teenager I had a brief fling with a boy called Iain.
Back then it seemed a normal enough name to me!
Wouldn't imagine it's as widely used today but that in my opinion would be a good thing!

I've definitely heard a lot worse. Fwiw I always loved the name Henry when I was at school and people laughed at me for liking it. It's really popular now, so you might just find that you're laughing 'on the other side of your face' (as the saying goes) in a few years OP!

It's not outdated here (also Scottish) I know lots of Ian's across the age ranges. Fairly classic.

My sons middle name is Ian after my daddy who was a lovely man.
Latterly I worked with another man called it who was a complete arse! (Even went so far as to suggest I had called my son after him despite knowing the family connection!)
It's a good name though

It's dated, but it's not an unpleasant name.

I prefer it spelled Iain.
