How would you pronounce Eira?

We love the name Eira but don't want her to have to correct people on how to pronounce her name her whole life... so thought a straw poll would help us decide how intuitive it is.

Eye-ra (as others have said)

Names that people can;t pronounce by reading them in the country you live in aren;t generally a good idea in my experience especially if you have a child who gets self conscious about explaining the pronounciation to EVERYONE! First hand experience of my (living in England) niece Cerys who most commonly got called "Cerise" and who was mighty thankful when Cerys Matthews became famous!

My immediate thought was A-ra, pronouncing the ei as it is in veil, reins, eight, etc.

Agree with Welsh people. South and West Wales (though I've only really heard the name in west Wales)....eye-ra.

My Great Aunt was named Eira; she pronounced it 'Eye-Ra'. She was from a very small Welsh village in the Beacons.

My initial thought is Eire like Ireland but I am not sure. If it is Eire I must admit I prefer the name Eirn (Eireann) which is reasonably common here too.

I know two Eira's - one pronounces it Eye-ra and the other Ay-ra.

I think Ay-ra is more correct, but I'm not sure.

Are you Welsh op?
I think, and I say think it's Eire, like the Gaelic name for Ireland. But my nan was always called Clara or Janey, definately completely outs myself if any of my family are on here. So I think I've heard Eira pronounced about once in my life.

I know I always found it funny cos my maternal grandparent are Irish, so I'd get confused between Eira and Eire!

But only because I know an Eira and that's how she pronounces it.
