Thoughts on the name Michael?

I love it. I know a couple of Michaels, and there's a mix of whether they are called Mike, Mick or Michael. Depends on the person.

I like Michael, it's very popular in the states, loads who are now middle aged and older. Not so much babies nowadays.

If you like it, go for it.

My ds has a name everyone said would be shortened, he's nearly 15 now and still gets his full name (or more likely our distinct surname). He also has friends called David and Stephen who don't get Dave or Steve.

I love the name. It isn't popular now, but a lovely masculine name for a man. Important to recognise when choosing a name that they are not babies forever .

Love the name Michael. Earlier this year I met a wonderful Michael - had to throw him back, unfortunately, but retain my high opinion of him and his name.

I just don't get this bland thing when used for a name like Michael which has been consistently popular for centuries. However, I suppose for me the fact that a name is popular doesn't equate to being bland, any more than the fact that nobody else in recorded history has had a name makes it interesting.

My adoptive grandad is called Michael and he's often called Mick which I'm not terribly fond of. My stepdad's and eldest brother's middle names are also Michael. Idk, it just doesn't ring my bell.

We nearly called one of our ds's Michael but only stopped because where my DH is from it would be pronounced differently (nearly Michelle) & we wanted a name that was the same in both cultures. But kids with that name get called Mischi here for short which I absolutely love.

I know a toddler Michael. I think it's really cute. I think they call him Mikey. Nice to hear something different on a baby then the usual William/Harry/Oliver. Yes from me op :)

I went to school with a vile red-haired bully called Karen, but fortunately I have met several really nice Karens since! Odd how one experience can completely colour how we feel about a name.

I went to a school with a complete psycho called Michael, he's still a complete prick now.

My next door neighbour's son is called Michael, he's nice but quiet!

Love it. My lovely Dad's name (he's mostly Mike but sometimes Michael). Well known but not common.

I have a name that is very often shortened, so does my daughter, so does my son. I've just refused all my life to answer to any of the shorter versions and so has my daughter, and it seems to have worked. My son decided for himself when he was about 7 that he wanted to be known by a short version of his name and that has worked too. It's not inevitable that a name gets shortened, and of course after the first few years that is the child's decision, not the parents'. It's his/her name, after all.

I like it. I don't think it was ever 'the most common name in the last 70 years'. Unless that poster is in Ireland - maybe that's true over there?
