I really want to honour my DH's granddad by giving our son his name as a middle name but his name is....

He's the loveliest man ever and I'd really like to honour him like this but I'm just not sure I can do that to my son!

How bad is it?

My brother in law is Ross Donald after his grandad. He loves it.

I used to work in the far northwest of Scotland lots of men were called Donald Macdonald though I don't think it was the best choice but it was almost certainly because it was their grandfathers name

Donald is a perfectly normal name more so in Scotland than England

Think it was already suggested but could the Grandfather choose a name himself? Eg "grandpops - we think you are ace so would you like to choose a middle name or even use your own?" You might find out then that he actually hates his name and doesn't want it to be used

I quite like Milo Donald (though your first name choices are not ones I would have chosen).

My dd has the name of a friend who died while I was pregnant as her middle name. It's not a name I would have used as a first name, or one I particularly liked before, but it feels right that she has it.

How about two middle names and put Donald second? My DC have two middle names and the second one often gets dropped

Do it, it's wonderful to link the generations in that way. Gives a great sense of connection/belonging.

Only shame is that Trump is in the news....but your little one will know why he has that name.

I think you'd be ahead of the curve with Donald, it's a strong classic name, thing it will defo come back into fashion in the next 5/10 years.

This thread has reminded me that a late and much loved friend's middle name was Don, because his father Donald preferred it. Friend would have been in his 70s now, and even when he was a child nobody thought anything of it.

I went to high school with a boy that had his grandfathers name as a middle name. It was 'Leslie'...when people found out a few laughed and said "seriously" but once he said it was his now deceased grandfathers name everyone seemed to accept it. This all happened in the space of about an hour and it was never laughed at again.

I think sometime the reason for using a name is more important than the name itself.

Ds has a pretty grim middle name but he loves having his grandfathers' names (first name is another grandfather).

Has no-one watched Mad Men? Donald Draper is the central character and with his dashing looks I'm sure your DS will suit it perfectly (ignore the womanising and alcoholism). And Mr Trump will be a distant memory before you DS is out of nappies, fingers crossed...

I think go for it, I think it's a good solid name. I'm having to let go of the idea that we're going to have a Bernard however much I loved my sadly passed DF...

I know a few Dons who are neither Scottish nor aged - it's a perfectly normal name.

Donald seems utterly and completely normal to me. I know many of all ages, from pre-schoolers to old men. I wouldn't give it a moment's thought (I am Scottish, though - it doesn't seem to be commonly used elsewhere, reading this thread?).
