Please help me find a name... Unisex names...

Or boys names that can be used for a girl (including as an adult woman!). Tradititional, preferably old (biblical, or possibly old English, or similar, or diminutive of those) not American, not unique...

The two names that most closely fit this bill so far are Sam, and Jamie. Neither of which are possible for good family reasons.

Other thoughts are Eddie, Charlie, or Phil. But I don't like the female versions of those names, so it would be the short form only. Would that be ok?

Other ideas?

And someone on here the other day was querying if Avery was for a boy or girl and the outcome was it is unisex.

Eden was a boys name but now appears more typically to be for girls.

I think Rowan and Robin/Robyn are lovely

Only other I can thing of that's not mentioned so far is Jodie, i used to babysit a boy called that, and have worked with two female Jodies.

Fionn is a gaelic boys name and Ffion is a welsh girls name so Finn would work for either in my opinion.

Rowan seems unisex to me. Possibly that's only to me though because I know a female Rowan.

if you prefer a more masculine name and you end up with a girl, why do you need a 'boys' name that could work on a girl ? why not give her a girls name that when shortened is more of a trad boys name...in future she might prefer a more female name ?

So Charlotte...called Charlie
Georgina ..called george
Frederika ...called freddie
Nigella...called nigel ( not sure i like that one !!)
Phillipa ...called phil
there is even Rupertina ...called rupes ???
Thomasina
Finula
etc etc
pretty much most boys names have feminised version

or

Joanna/Josephine...Jo.

Sandy, Sasha and Alex all v unisex

Casey is a more modern name of course but I listen to that and i can't decide if I think it's right for a boy or a girl. So that might appeal.

Finn is not a girls name or unisex name imo. Nuala is the short version of fionnuala/finnuala.

There's Eddie, short for Edina on Ab Fab, I suppose.

Phyll in The Railway Children had the full name Phyllis.

I know a woman called Steve whose full name is Stephanie and quite a few Georges who are Georgina/Georgia.

Phil in The Railway Children is short for Phyllis and Bobby is short for Roberta.

You could have an Olive or Olivia called Ollie.

Though I'm not really convinced by why it's cool to call a girl by a boy's name - I know you said unisex but actually most of the names on this thread are traditional boys' nicknames used instead for girls. They're not really unisex.

Lauren was a boys name until Lauren Bacall took on the name and became a big star. It is now a unisex name, used by girls mostly but still unisex. I actually think as a boys name it's so different and refreshing!

Phil is lovely, the Railway Children has a girl in it called Phil and I don't think it's ever mentioned what her full name is. Finn works fine by itself, I can think of Finnula if you wanted a longer version.

I think Finn is fine.

Personally I'm not keen on short versions of names on birth certificates, Eddie could be good but to me feels like it should be short for something. Anything to do with names is so subjective though so I'd do what feels right to you.
