Lost dad. Struggling to agree a name

Hi, new here, looking for some help.
My wife is due in August, will be our second baby - Cillian Francis is our 2-year old. If it's a baby girl were both happy with Niamh, if it's a boy we're stuck........ Being honest no boys names really stand out for me, I guess I'm just so convinced it's a baby girl were having. So..... my wife is in love with the boys name Cońan, when I see it all I can imagine is the Conan the barbarian. Most don't but I do. Other names she has mentioned are Rońan, Patrick, Sean and Gerard. Gerard being my fav outta those. What do you guys think? And maybe anything you could suggest?

Conan makes me think of Conan the Barbarian too, but it probably won't have that connotation to your son's generation. Personally I like different initials for my children so I'd not have two with the same first letter.

Don't agree that the mum should get the casting vote, and I'm sure you will find the right name for your potential son. Might be worth looking at the Scottish name stats for Gerard to see if it's on the up. Out of fashion names can be quite nice though, easily recognisable but not shared with too many contemporaries.

Feckarseindustries..truely greatfull to my wife for what she's done previous giving me a boy and for what she's about to do, we have always agreed stuff as a couple, if we can't agree I'll happily concede, at this stage I'm quite glad we can discuss it. But thanks for your input.

Conan. She grew the baby for 9 months, and she's about to have him (or her) squeeze out of her vagina over several torturous hours (or removed surgically, we don't know). At this stage, she really should have the final say, especially if you don't really mind the name she likes, and don't have a better one that you love.

Next time, you push it out of your vagina, then you can choose, ok?

I know a Conan (has a slightly different spelling) but he is awesome and really suits his name.

Oisin is my favourite Irish boys name. I would pronounce it osh-een (I'm from Ulster but my Irish language knowledge is pretty pants). I have heard the uh-SHEEN pronunciation as well. I like either but think I prefer osh-een.

Or, confusingly, Ush-EEN, with the stress on the last syllable, depending on where in Ireland you are. Grin

That should have a fada on the second 'i', too, incidentally. Oisín.

Thanks Jinnygreenteeth, yeah that's just what the wife's said, it would be something id definitely be sure of prior to naming our baby.

Lol, that's a couple mentioned Gerry being an old man, that's one name that I suggested that we can kinda agree on 😁😁😁

OP, be aware that - as well as the fadas entirely changing the pronunciation (and for God's sake look this up! They're not just there for decoration!) you are putting fadas over consonants in some of the names you list, which isn't possible - they can only go on vowels.

Ronan is 'ROE-nan'. Rónán is 'Roe-NAWN', for instance, with the emphasis on the second syllable.

Gerard is definitely fiftysomething and balding to me.

The cillian I know has a brother called Cullen.

Thank you all for your replys, and also for guiding me about too much detail posted. Really appreciate your comments. My good mates baby's name is Finn, think that's a awesome name. We're both Scottish but we have some Irish connections, as for the fada in totally unaware of how it affects the name that just how it was out to me, I would have pronounced it Roe-nan. I'm unsure of Garrett, haven't heard that before.

I think we're pretty sold on Patrick as a middle name, Ang likes it and my granda was a Patrick so hold some sentiment to me.

Ruled a few out after debating again last night so hopefully will have a name for the birth, knowing my luck it will be a girl.

Ps not that I'm complaining 😜

Patrick/Paddy or Conor. Not Gerard. That's middle aged mans name. Sounds odd for a baby!

I like Conan and didn't think of Conan the barbarian when I saw it! I also like Patrick but I know a lot of Paddys.
What about Garrett? I think it's similar to Gerald but maybe slightly more unusual.

My little boy is Patrick, it's a fab name! Not too common now and it has great nickname potential. One if his middle names is Gerard, which I think goes really well. (And we have Francis on our list for his one!). X

My DS is Cohan - similar to Conan. Irish spelling is Comhghan I think.
