Ariana (Aria). Does it instantly make you think of GoT?

I love Ariana, but would plan on calling dd Aria for short.
DH watches Game of Thrones and i've never seen it, however apparently Aria is a character in GoT and he doesn't want everyone to think we've named our child after a character from a popular tv show.

Opinions please? I love the name.

Yes j would think got too and I love the name. The only problem with the tv programme is that there is the potential for anything to happen so a heroine can change, have a particularly gruesome death, torture etx so there is a risk that there could be a negative association
It depends how you are pronouncing it or how many people will insist on arrrr ree ya

The thing is loads of people seem to be naming their little girls Aria because of GoT. So your girl might grow up to meet other little girls named Aria/Arya who were actually named after Arya Stark. It's a great name though. And Arya Stark is a great character. :)

I have considered Ariana too, btw. Although it was kind of the opposite though process, it was more like "Arya is really cool, but loads of people are going for it. Maybe something that sounds similar... Ariana??". We decided against it though. The link will probably last a couple of years but soon enough most people will forget it.

To me Aria is a musical term.

I've never seen GOT or PLL so wouldn't make that connection at all.
I know a boy of Indian decent called Arya but it's not pronounced the same as Aria.

There's a beautiful roadside sculpture near these parts named Aria... I think it's a lovely name.

It really does and I've never seen it. But I've seen loads of Aria's and variations particularly for middle names and all have been inspired by GOT. It's very faddy.

I didn't realise it was a popular name, might have to remove it from my list now.

To the poster that laughed at a child being named after a popular tv character, I've never seen Game of Thrones and never heard of the character. I'm sure I'm not the only person either.

Makes me think of PLL but it's a lovely name. Aria is right up there in the top names of the moment though if this bothers you.

My husband told me that the last series of GoT was the most watched programme that Sky have ever broadcast. And that doesn't count the vast array of people watching it online or streaming.

I was in a cafe a year or so ago and I heard a couple calling their toddler Aria and laughed a lot becaue of the inevitable reference. Couldn't work out why someone would name their child after a current tv character. Also, no one knows the ending. She could end up being a horrible namesake!

Don't get me wrong, it is a lovely name but the link is unavoidable in my opinion.

I know a baby Aria (don't watch games of thrones) and I avoided saying it for ages because I kept forgetting how to pronounce it as I had never heard of it before.

I know an Arianna age 10 and prefer it to Aria.

Aria is a beautiful name. That's the name of the main character in the Italian film Incompresa by Asia Argento ( whose BC name is Aria, I believe).
Also know a cute little girl called Ariella.

Next season of GOT is the last apparently so won't be an issue. I think it's a lovely name.

There's a similar sounding name Rhian, it's Welsh and it means Maiden.

My little girl is Aria, and people do ask if it's from GoT a lot. Or if not that, then pretty little liars.
We got it from a game. It sounded pretty, we looked up the meaning, and the fact it was the main tune in an opera and had roots meaning air and chosen it. GoT and PLL didn't factor into the equation - didn't even realise about PLL until I started watching it on maternity leave!

Aria And Arianna (Ariana) aren't two versions of the same name and they have two different meanings. Aria means Air and Arianna/ Ariana means chaste.

The TV show will be finished within the next two years, so I don't think that long-term there will be any association to be honest.

However, do bear in mind that as a result of the show, the name is super popular at the moment, if that's something you care about.

@Greenyogagirl, I think it's just nice to have a more formal name for official use, or when you want to tell them off Grin
