I like both names, but it depends how you feel about a name being very popular.
I've been watching the 'Babies born recently' thread and there have been lots of mentions of Violet, it's surprisingly popular at the moment.

Melody. I really don't get the hype over Violet. It's one of the most harsh sounding girl's names there is.

We were going to name our DD Melody I think it's a beautiful name but don't like it shortened to Mel so that went out the window. Violet makes me think of that chewing gum girl in Charlie & the chocolate factory & Parma violet sweets - neither a pleasant association for me Smile

I feel the same as NavyAndWhite. I see that too. One letter away. I was also going to suggest Elodie - which is a much prettier name then Melody imo. Plus you can have Elle/Ellie for a nickname and that is a very cool name I think ;) If you chose Melody then you have Mel/Melly... .not so good.

I think Melody Violet flows better, but Violet with no Melody is a better name
