Don't forget that Billy could always choose to just be Bill when he's older, which is a perfectly adult name

Of course the op should choose the name she loves. But the purpose of her op is to ask others' opinions!

Personally I happen to dislike both names. But please feel free to ignore my opinion Smile.

I can't believe some of the negativity here! Both names are lovely - long or short versions, obviously not everyone's got different tastes and that's fine but you can't judge someone on their name!! There was an Alfie that won gold at Wimbledon this weekend and there's also a famous opera singer called Alfie and I'm sure many many more successful Alfies to come.

Such an awful thing to say, and says more about the person doing the judging than the child IMO!

Yes I agree with NotYoda I had a friend who was christened Debbie, she's always hated it, she changed it to Deborah when she was 20,

But I'd put William on the Birth Cert. as Billy is maybe a bit cute for an adult and it's nice to have a choice

It really is up to you what you name your son! obviously not everyone will like it ( that would be impossible!)

Do you know the song "Along came Bill". It's from Show Boat and my mother loved it because my lovely dad was Bill. Of course he was a William but always called Bill or Billy.

I know both an Alfie (well several) and one Billy. Both boys at the moment and that is their given names.

I would have to go with William with Billy as a nickname but if I HAD to choose one I would go for Billy over Alfie. Just because I like the sound of it more.

My 13 year old DS is Alfie William and his name suits him perfectly, as I imagine it still to do when he is a strapping 16 year old in three years time! Hmm

If it's a choice of Alfie v Billy then Alfie. If it's. Alfred v William then William.

My strapping 18 year old really suits his name. And he has a job too!
Both names are lovely and classic in their long form. Both are inherited family names and I am really happy with them. Enjoy your Billy or Alfie, which ever you choose.

I don't think either name is posh tbh. I'd have said Billy is quite an ordinary name and for that reason I prefer it to Alfie which is too trendy at the moment.

Definitely put the full name on the birth cert. though.

My little boys called billy and thats his name on his birth certificate. Ive never heard it as a cute name and think it will suit him through out his life. It is a family name and im yet to meet another child with the same name.
