Hey,

So we're 2 weeks away from our due date and beginning to (mildly) panic over names.

'Yay' or 'Nay' on the current front-runner if it's a boy...

I named my dc the names i liked obviously but I also gave a lot of thought to how the name would sound as a toddler, child, teenager and adult.

For me personally, Rupert is Rupert the bear. I don't know any Ruperts. I'm not from the UK though.

I'm laughing that Rupert Cosmo doesn't sound middle class Smile

Also why the need for a NN? Rupes, poops, Roo ( the kangaroo) just no

To be honest, I was teased at secondary about my names, many children are. I love them ( the Orlanda is romantic and the furiosa describes me perfectly..Grin). But I didn't care, in the welter of misery about other things it wasn't important. If you like them, go for it.

We have Cosmo as a middle name for many reasons, one of which was that it was a nickname for one of us when younger. The first name is very normal which kind of dilutes it.

But honestly, call your son what you want to! I don't think names are linked to 'class' any more to be honest. I think it has a nice rhythm to it.

Not a great Cosmo fan, but other upper middlish names I like ( expecting be flamed) are your own

So... Mumsnet has spoken and from what I'm hearing, the names Rupert & Cosmo - although not without their charms - might not work so well together (...and I hadn't realised the Jacky Collins connection before starting this thread. Good job I checked, eh).

Sadly, it looks like Cosmo might be swapped out for one of the reserves. But I expect 'Rupes' will stay ;)

I really like Rupert. It's uncommon but not modern and faddy. It's a good proper name that suits every age. Lots of lovely nicknames and he will be taken seriously in whatever path life takes him.

Not a fan of Cosmo but you hardly use the middle name so not a big issue.

Rufus or Reuben might be a touch less rah...? I am tittering away here as our children go to private school (not posh, just military) and there are no Ruperts or Cosmos! There is, however, a Jayden and a Dwayne so perhaps the tide is turning?!

I went to uni with a Rupert - v normal bloke, no one raised an eyebrow.

Thing is you're stuffed on mumsnet - Jayden/kaiden/Kai names are chavvy. Rupert is 'posh and poncey'

Just call him Noah/Reuben/George or one of the other tedious and faddy 'mumsnet approved' names, like eleventy billion other babies have

Or go with Rupert
Easy to spell and pronounce, classic, unusual but not weird
Suits toddler-grown up

What's not to like?

I think Cosmo only works if you are v posh and/or Italian. I think Rupert on it's own is ok, if toned down with a more main stream middle name. I also really like Ruben which would also give similar ( and less pooey) nick names.

We have a nephew Rupert, who has always been Ru - he's 14.

I love the name Cosmo. Although we have friends who have a dog with this name so I tend to think of dogs.

How about Rufus, Rudy or Ruari? You could use Run as a nn for any of those.

Cosmo is a bit pretentious.

I'd have absolutely no problem shouting "Rupes" at a football match.

I do hate the "if you like it o for it" approach. It's not the OP who's going to have to live with the name for the next 80 years!

And it's all very well saying that people who snigger at a child's name aren't worth knowing. Of course they aren't. Bu the child still has to live with their name being sniggered at.

I also think these threads are a bit we would like a name that stands out from the crowd / is different. OP is this your first child? Because from my 11 year old ' s point of view, that would be the last thing he'd want. Are you going to stand on the sidelines of a rugby / football field and shout "great tackle rupey / poops"? I just think perhaps you need to imagine how a name will work for a toddler / a teen / an adult (and every stage in between).

Don't get me wrong, think I got it wrong with my child's name (massively too popular but didn't realise at the time, it was just my favourite name for a child) but think ahead. Good luck with whatever you choose.
