Christopher with Kit as shortened name

Love it. And I think, whilst clearly less than Chris, it is a known nn. Goes well with your oldest too.

Ah but Disappoint - you can't always predict how things will turn out, even if you only ever use a name growing up. I'm Alexandra and my parents called me Alex all through growing up, but somehow at university I got called Ali, and that has now stuck and everyone calls me it, apart from my brother who refuses to almost in protest! My parents now call me Ali too, even though I'm sure they would prefer Alex as that is what they chose for me in the beginning....

Just saying that he may choose to call himself Chris at some point, which you might not be able to avoid.... but if you put Kit on the passport then it's much more unlikely!

I know quite a few Kits who have Christopher on their birth certificate. None of them are ever called Chris, presumably because their name is Kit and Chris doesn't sound anything like Kit. If you always call your child Kit, that's the name they'll use unless they decide to introduce Christopher into their lives.

The initial thing is interesting; one of my children has always been known by a traditional short version of their name that starts with a different letter and they think of their initial being the shortened name, whereas of course it officially isn't (like Bill and William).

Love Kit as a short for Christopher - if I had a boy that would be on the shortlist. I'd go for it.

Like you, I don't like the name Chris, so we just called DS Kit. I sort of wish I had given him a longer name to have the formal version if he wanted (his sisters have longer formal names and then nicknames) but in the end, the worry of him choosing to one day call himself Chris, let alone others doing it for him, was enough for me to just pick Kit!

My shortened name doesn't begin with the same letter as my full name, but it's never occurred to me not to use my full name as my signature, even though I'm not called it very often. Don't most people use their full name (or full name initial) in their signature?

I absolutely love the name Kit - I wouldn't think of it as a NN for Christopher but I don't think that matters. Is there a reason you want to have Christpher as his full name? Does Kit go nicely with your surname.

It's a non issue if he decides to use Chris when he is older or not.

He got to his 30s as a Kit without people trying to call him Chris. I think if you always introduce him as Kit people don't really even think about changing it, whereas if you introduce him as Christopher they might.

Kit Harrington is popularising the name a lot, thought not sure if he is a Christopher.

He's a Christopher but I read an interview where he said he didn't even realise that was his actual name until he was 12 years old. He can't have been a very enquiring child!

I love the name Kit! It was on our shortlist for this baby but I can't stand the name Chris (family member who I don't like has this name) so decided against it just incase, people don't always use the nn you would preffer.

You can't control it, but unless most DC stick with the name their family calls them as their day to day name

(until teen rebellion hits but that's another story)

Once they get to 4 or so, you can't control what they call themselves or what others call them.

Our Kit/Christopher is at Primary school - he certainly hasn't become Chris. I can't actually imagine why/how that would happen, as all his friends and teachers just know him as Kit. He also has never been called Kitty or anything like that. We had pretty positive responses when we first told people what he was called - it's a family name for us - was slightly gutted when Wayne Rooney picked it though!

I like that. Kit Harrington has done well with that name so you've got both our votes :-)

Christopher is nice enough, but Kit isn't very nice, sorry... When he starts school, he will most likely become Chris, so I think it's important that you like that. As you say, your son's name is Thomas/Tom, occasionally Tommy (which is lovely) does that mean Kit may be Kitty? That's far too feminine... Personally, I'd pick something else...
