Love a a lot of the GOT names, but was wondering whether this name screams GOT or whether it was enough of a name before for GOT not to spring to mind.

Also, what are peoples' thoughts?

I immediately thought GoT. I do like it, but that would be my first thought.

Given that it is from Game of Thrones it would be the people pronouncing it 'Lie-anna' that would be wrong ;) I know a Liane and a Liana too, both with the 'lee' sound. I think if you like the sound, then I'd go with the more standard spelling and avoid the GOT variant.

have't read or watched GOT so I would just think "pretty name"

But honestly, she will spend her life correcting people who pronounce it Lee anna rather than Lie anna. I have a dd with an unusual name with similar vowels and she goes by a shortened version now as she was so sick of no one pronouncing it right.

Linnea is a lovely name. google Linnea and Monet's Garden. I'm always surprised it hasn't become more popular.

I've always thought it was one of the most real world-usable GoT names. As long as she never meets a boy called Rhaegar you're probably ok :P

I'm another who thought Lyanna Stark straight away... However I LOVE it! There are some gorgeous names on GOT, Arya was on my shortlist if the baby I'm pregnant with at the minute had been a girl Smile

Oh, is it? Didn't realise. He seems to get a lot of his names through a slight twist on standard ones so I assumed Theon was a similar take on Theo.

Theo/dore is one of my favourite names as it happens!

Bogburglar, Theon is actually a 'real' name which existed before ASoIaF. Same root as Theodore.

As for Lyanna, I like it and I think it's not too restricted to GoT to use. She's a minor character and many won't make the connection. I've also always liked Alysanne and Alayne from the series!

It will always date your child to now, all the Charlenes I have ever met were named after Kylie in the late 80s

I have a not that unusual name but a less common spelling. I hate it. It is always being misspelt. It ranges from being slightly annoying to very inconvenient having to send back official docs etc to get spelling corrected.

If you say the name outloud how would you spell it, if you say it to a few friends how would they? Give it a real life test and consider if you could be about to spend many years correcting spellings.

I thought Lyanna Stark as soon as I saw the title and I'd expect most or at least a lot of people to assume that's where you'd taken the name from. Agree with pp to at least wait out this series before deciding...

I think it's a terrible idea to name a child after something so current. It will date terribly.

I have never heard of GOT or the name. I wouldn't know how to say it but would opt for Lie-anna. I think you'd get a lot of variations on pronunciation.

It reminds me of the 1980s name Leanne.

A friend of mine has a daughter called Leigh-Anna

But she's 5 so past the got references. It's a nice name I think

Don't even think about it until the end of this series. There's a strong possibility that when we finally see her it will be in the context of something memorably horrible happening to her.

I thought of GOT before I even read your question... And I'm not even really a GOT fan.

And even though Lyanna is already dead there are quite a few things that could still be revealed about her (or does the reader/viewer finally know how she died/what Stark had to promise her...? If yes then it's probably a rather safe GOT name).

I personally prefer Linnea. But Lyanna is a pretty name.

I thought 'Ned Stark's sister' as soon as I saw the thread title, but it is quite a nice name and is a lot less out there than a lot of other GoT names.
