I must be really old. Does no one else remember the advert for the perfume Anaïs Anaïs? The diaeresis over the i indicates that it is pronounced separately like the e in Zoë. In English it sounds closest to An-eye-ees.

Like Anya. Would pronounce Anaya An-eye-a. Agree about lunatic and loony associations of Luna.

CaoNiMao · 18/05/2016 07:21

They all sound a bit 'footballer's child'...

Lara could be a good alternative!

mumsy83 · 17/05/2016 22:51

Thanks again for all your comments. Still think 'Luna' is really pretty

And in English it's the start of the word LUNAtic Grin

nectarini1983 · 17/05/2016 20:01

Luna is Spanish for moon....

mrsschu · 17/05/2016 18:14

Luna is dreadful - it's the start of the word lunatic for heavens sake! Not keen on Anaya but Anya is nice.

rainbowstardrops · 17/05/2016 17:45

Well I never knew Anais wasn't pronounced An Ay. Not sure I like the 'proper' pronunciation!
'An Ay is beautiful even if it isn't quite correct! Grin

I really like all three. I agree about the lunatic link with Luna unfortunately and that was the reason it got relegated from my shortlist with dd2.

I'd pronounce Anaïs - an- AY-eess.

Others I liked starting with A were: Amaya/ Amaia, Amira, Amara, Aaliyah, Alicia, Alyssa, Alana.

Schmoochypoos · 17/05/2016 12:42

Anya gets my vote, have you thought about Lyra?

HouseOfBiscuits · 17/05/2016 12:31

I've only met one Anais and it was pronounced An-AY-iss. I'd have said Annay before that though!

rainbowstardrops · 17/05/2016 12:29

I would pronounce Anais 'A nay'. Only ever heard it that way. Wouldn't have occurred to me that people would find it tricky to pronounce!

Mishaps · 17/05/2016 12:28

Not Luna - children will call her loony.

NoMudNoLotus · 17/05/2016 12:27

Luna .... Loony when she is older.

HouseOfBiscuits · 17/05/2016 12:26

You could have Annie as nickname for Anya.

I like Lara short for Larissa too.

Anais is pretty but the pronunciation thing would deter me from using it.

nilbyname · 17/05/2016 12:13

I have a Luna! And I am very away of its marmiteness.

So far she isn't at school so no readings have come up, but my some has a very run of the mill name and it gets shortened and teased. All names do!

Anya or Luna get my vote.

ABitAsleep · 17/05/2016 12:07

mumsy I would promounce Mila as Mee-la too, like the actress Mila Kunis

Miloarmadillo1 · 17/05/2016 11:21

Choose Anya, it's lovely.
Luna makes me think of Harry Potter and too close to lunatic for playground teasing.
I'm not fond of Anaya.

WanderingTrolley1 · 17/05/2016 11:17

Anya.

mumsy83 · 17/05/2016 11:15

Thank you for your comments.
@Abitasleep thank you! quite a few names I like from your selection.. Love Mila pronounced mee-la was just a bit worried about people pronouncing it incorrectly

Luna is a lovely name for a puppy, not sure about a human baby.

I really like Lara.

Frazzled2207 · 17/05/2016 10:38

Anaya sounds made up and one of those "how do you pronounce that" names.
Like the other two.

YorkieDorkie · 17/05/2016 10:34

Anya - beautiful
How about Anara?

ApocalypseSlough · 17/05/2016 10:33

Anya is lovely!
