I really like it.
DP is unsure.

I don't know any Alabamas.

I do know children who have been bullied for having weird names though.

Honestly, I think if you are going to give your child a strange name, at least make it something which is easy to shorten to something more "normal" sounding, in case they hate it.

I don't know buttered, I don't know any Harriet's. I'd ask my children but I like to think that it wouldn't occur to them to bully a child, for their name or otherwise,

How many Alabamas do you know?

Are they all bullied because their name is Alabama?

Not really Blu, the whole Georgia line of reasoning kind of negated that point for me.

I'm with Mrsfluff I love it.

Horses for courses this naming business isn't it?

Personally I perceive Harriet as tantamount to emotional abuse, but I'd probably never be so rude as to tell a person who was planning to name their child Hartiet that I thought so.

In any case thanks for all the opinions, I have a good few months left to settle on a name if I do choose Alabama I'll be sure to announce it on here for your delectation Smile

It could be shortened to Al.
Would probably become Alla (really??) or Ali, or Bami or Bamma, or , in school, wham or wham bam.

No I honestly haven't.

It is appealing though and so far no logical reasons not to continue to keep it on the 'maybe' list.

Just something to add to your decision making. The meaning of the name 'Alabama':

"the traditional story is that Alabama comes from the Creek Indian language (meaning "tribal town"). Other sources claim it is derived from the Choctaw Indian language, translating as "thicket-clearers" or "vegetation-gatherers*

Georgia isn't in Alabama Hmm

Birmingham is though, so surely naming a child Alabama is akin to naming her England rather than Birmingham?

Or West-Midlands if we're being pedantic/ hyphenated.

Georgia as a name is a derivative of Georgina, it isn't derived from the place Georgia, Alabama.

I like places names but unfortunately Alabama is like calling your child Birmingham.

So if enough people use the name of a US state with negative connotations it becomes an accepted name and is therefore immune from impunity.

Fair enough.

Alabama sounds nicer than Georgia. ( and is apparently home to fewer members of the KKK, plus Tarantino used it.)
