We have had a few raised eyebrows when we have said DD (due in July) will be called Effie, FIL said "why can't you pick a normal name for once?" (DS is Rudy and its like marmite).

DH and I love both the names we have picked for our children but I just wondered what MNs views are on Effie? Is it another marmite name?

I don't think I would use it as the actual name on the birth certificate. I would either use Elizabeth or Euphemia on the birth certificate if you wanted to call her Effie. Otherwise it isn't a proper name. I have the same view about Katherine / Kate / Kitty.

Too close to effing for me I'm afraid. I would worry that is what she will be called at secondary school. Teenage boys have no mercy...

Op, I like your spunk and that you are sure about a name. It's so hard to fall in love with a name enough to give it to your child. That's good. (Says me still searching high and low for a boys name I even like!).

Anyhoo... Effie is not for me (will not list reasons since you are so sure) but I'm pleased for you.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, be it good or bad!

Our DS isn't Rudolf and Effie won't be short for anything. They both have very traditional middle names that we will be happy for them to use if they dislike their names when they are old enough to make up their own minds. I obviously love their names and think they are pretty tame compared to some of the children's names where we live.

FWIW I think other kids can/will make fun of any name if they want to.

I have an unusual first name which I was given after my mums favourite song. I hated it growing up as I went to school with Vickys, Claire's, Lauren's etc (I'm not saying there is anything wrong with those names btw) so I stuck out like a sore thumb but I absolutely love my name now I am older and I'm so glad that my parents named me something different Smile

I knew an Effie when i was growing up in the late 80s / early 90s and she was great, funny, clever and pretty, so I only have good thoughts about it.

And if by some random chance Effie (who lived in Crewe) is reading this i would love a pm.

I like it if it's short for something... Can't you chose a longer version too so she has a choice when she's older? Lots of good suggestions in the thread. Is your DS a Rudolph?

I really don't like it at all. It sounds silly to me. Also it's got a kind of 'Victorian under house maid' feeling to it, not necessarily a bad thing, but I don't like the name in this case.

We know an Evelyn who is known as Effie.

As a standalone name, I agree it's one of those that's cute now but I could see pissing her off later in life.

It's my NN which only became a NN when I was about 18. I love it more than my real name much to my mothers upset and its quite nice cos over the years I've had people ask if I'm Spanish/Greek/if it's Latin/Celtic, I like that's it's sort of unplaceable and before the Hunger Games the most famous reference was the secretary in The Maltese Falcon and she's badass so that's fine with me!

Personally - I think if you both love it then use it and use it as it is, not just a NN not biased oh no not at all

my daughter also has a traditional NN for her full name

Its on my short list of 5 girls names, I really like it, not short for anything. Reading your comments and there was a effing hell.... as our name also rhymmes with Hell I might be asking for trouble - with most other names I love it -!

Effie is straight out of the Deep South, pre-Martin Luther King era for me. Don't like it, especially without a full name to fall back on.
