Eleanora - honest opinions please!

I've picked Eleanora as a potential name for my daughter, due in August. However, it has met with mixed responses - please tell me your honest opinions/reactions to it!

I like it, Nora for short. I think I'd prefer Eleanor if the Ella Ellie names weren't quite so popular nowadays.

Eleanor is nicer.
Dd is an Ellen, but always called Ellie.
The French pronunciation of Eleanor is beautiful - El- AY- a - nor

Just wanted to add that we gave DD a name that has raised many eyebrows. She's 3 now and it still happens. Usually it's the old "what an unusual name" followed by Confused But we loved the name from the start and still do. Can't imagine her being called anything else. So don't let others opinions put you off. It's definitely not a name that will get her teased or affect her later in life. If she wants, when older she can quite easily go by Eleanor or Ellie or Nora or any other combination she can think of!

A bit fusty, I imagine a bucksome great-aunt taking no-nonsense. I love the nn Nora though! And sounds like you love it so you ought to go for it :)

DH wanted Eleanora for DD (now 19). At the time, I thought of Nora Batty and would it get shortened to that in the playground?

We went with Ellena (shortened to Ellie except when she pisses me off!) in the end although people often put Eleanor by mistake.

I've always liked Eleanor, and I do like Eleanora. I don't know why but it makes me think of a horror film, thought that doesn't put me off ha!

Love Eleanora! Eleanor is lovely too, but Eleanora has something special about it.

Don't like it at all and never heard of it.

Lots of Eleanors and Ellens around here for some reason.

I think both Eleanor and Eleanora are lovely. Eleanora is more unusual and quite regal - I like it.

But with Eleanora you can guarantee it'll get shortened, whereas with Eleanor you/she might get away with always using her name in full - I know a couple of Eleanors that were never shortened.

So I guess for me, the crux of it is: do you mind the likely nicknames? If, for example, you can't stand Ella/Ellie as a nickname, then Eleanora might be a risky option.

Thanks for the responses everyone! At the moment I'm inclined to go with Eleanor I think rather than Eleanora, depending on which suits her best once she's born Smile

Eleanor is pretty, and works well for a child and an adult. Eleanora sounds a bit frilly/try-hard.

You could call her Eleanora and find that she shortens it to Eleanor or Ellie because she thinks it's too much.

To me it sounds like Eleanora is too separate names and that is what I don't like about it. You can hear Ella and Norah and I know that's the point but it's just a mash up of two names to me. It's quite plodding too - doesn't flow easily. It's not a bad name just a little much.

I think it's beautiful and quite stylish. I think it's a great name for a teen and an adult too.
